The first name on this memorial is Captain Hector Fraser of the SS 'Hirano Maru'. His ship was sunk by UB91 in the Irish Sea in October 1918.

Captain Fraser is not commemorated by CWGC or SNWM.

Sorry GW, not spooky at all! noticed your post on the WGP and wondered if he was on a local war memorial even if he wasn't commemorated by CWGC and SNWM.

I found him on Conon Bridge.

Regards

Adm

Thank you for posting that, although I'd dispute his given age. In his obituary he is quoted as saying he'd been at sea 56 years and there is a record of him serving on the S.S. Murray in 1862. I doubt that even the Victorians would have let him go to sea as a cadet officer aged 7.

Good to see he has been commemorated. Perhaps 63 is his "official" age for war service?

Thanks

According to his certificates to be Second Mate, First Mate and Master, he was consistently born at Conon Bridge on 9th December 1855, and he first went to sea on 5th March 1873 on a square rigged sailing ship, as an apprentice
That makes his age of 63 to be correct. In fact age 17 is, if anything a bit old to first go to sea.
The 3 tickets mean that his first 20 years at sea, until he qualifies as Master, can be fully followed.
The previous service record was supposed to be verified when Officers Tickets were issued, so it is unlikely to be that far wrong.
Presumably that age of birth could be verified from Scottish Records.

It's more likely that whoever wrote the obituary was in error.

Thank you for the clarification. It's good to get confirmation of the details of merchant mariners. This still makes Captain Fraser one of Scotland's oldest First World War deaths even if he was "only" sixty three.

Kind regards

Adam
