Picked this up in my pm box GWF from Gordon (Carnbo Lad).

Hi,

Sorry to trouble you but are you the same dhubthaigh in the Scottish War Memorial Project?
If you are, you posted a comment regarding a John Binn Scots Greys who is remembered on the St Madoes War Memorial in November 2011.
I think that I may have found him as I have found a Jack Binns also known as John Binns who was born on the 24th of January 1896 in Edinburgh, his parents were a Grace and John Binns.
The 1901 Census records that the Binns family were still living in Edinburgh but had now moved to Borthwick Place, and that John Binns was working as a Railway Signal Fitter.
By the time of the 1911 Census Jack or John Binns as he is now known was working as the footman at Inchyra House, Glencarse.
John attested at Edinburgh, joining the Royal Scots as Private 20693 and landed in France on the 20th of May 1915. At some point after this he transferred to the 4th Field Survey Company, Royal Engineers as Pioneer 245504 and it was with them that he was Killed in Action on the 27th May 1917.
I suspect that Jack or John Binns is actually the John Binn on the War Memorial and that with the passage of time from him enlisting and moving away from the Glencarse area to when the Memorial was erected his details became distorted.

For some reason I am not able to post on the Scottish War Memorial Project site and wondered if you would be kind enough to submit this possibility if you agree with my findings.

Thanks

Gordon
