Monuments of war: How to read a war memorial.
I bought McIntyre’s book in 1993 and it was first published in 1990 but it still has a lot of good information for anyone interested in the British war memorials.
I will list a few of the chapter titles to give you an idea of what is covered.
Names
Age
Rank and Number
Awards and medals
The battles and Places
The causes They Fought For and How They Died
Religion
Local Affiliations
Empire and Commonwealth
Civilians
The Royal Navy and Merchant Marine
Who Provided the War Memorial
He also covers gardens, playing fields, altars, rolls of honour, hospitals etc.
McIntyre’s family comes from Eyemouth and he has transcribed quite a few Scottish memorials as examples.
City of Edinburgh Libraries used to have a copy in the Central Library.
