There is a little 'poly-pocket' sitting on the front of the memorial which looks like it may have been details of the men commemorated. The contents were soaking, so I didn't try to see what it contained in case everything fell to pieces.

Thanks for the information Thistle.

Perhaps this is newer than the previous poly-pocket I found as there were many more pages?

Do you know anything about the previous pages - are they still there or have they disintegrated into mush?

Such a shame as no doubt a fair bit of work was put in by someone researching the names.

SGT. JOHN SHARP, GORDON HIGHLANDERS.

I cannot find an alternative candidate, so I think that this is the man named on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

JOHN SHARPE. G.H.
John Sharpe – age 24 – Lance Corporal (4175) 9th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
John was employed as a grocer with Messrs D&J McEwen in Aberfoyle, Perthshire when he enlisted in 1914. He was a well known local runner and competed with success in the Gartmore Games, winning the Glasgow Cup several times. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was fatally wounded two months later during the battle of Loos.
(Source: Stirling Observer 13/10/1915 p.5 and Medal Roll/Card)
Born 1891 in Yetholm. Son of Robert and Margaret (Smart) Sharpe of Bowmont Cottage, Yetholm.
Died of Wounds on 28 September 1915 and buried in Noeux-Les-Mines Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial, Roxburghshire.

Dundee Courier - Monday 09 May 1921 WAR MEMORIAL UNVEILED AT ABERFOYLE.
In the presence of a large gathering the war memorial to the Aberfoyle and District heroes who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War was unveiled in beautiful weather at Aberfoyle on Saturday afternoon The unveiling ceremony was performed by the Duke of Montrose, Lord-Lieutenant of Stirlingshire, who was accompanied by the Duchess.
An impressive address was delivered by Lieutenant-Colonel A. M. B. Grahame of Arntiomy, Port of Monteith.
The memorial occupies a prominent, site in the grounds of the pretty little Parish Church. It takes the form of a Celtic cross, and bears the names of 34 men. After the pipers had played a lament and the "Last Post" had been sounded many beautiful wreaths and flowers were placed at the foot of the cross by relatives and others.

Note that there were only 34 WW1 names originally, compared to 55 now
