I was at the SAFHS conference at Allan Park South Church today and took the opportunity of checking out the war memorial (as one does!)

Allan Park South Church was formed as a result of an amalgamation of Allan Park Church and the South Church.
Allan Park was built in 1867 on the site of Busby’s Orchard between Dumbarton Road and Corn Exchange as a result of a “clash of personalities” between the minister and his assistant at the Erskine Church on St John Street. The assistant minister Reverend JT Gowanlock became minister of Allan Park which was part of the United Presbyterian Church.
The South Church was a product of the Disruption of 1843 and originally occupied a meeting house in the old High School (now the Stirling Highland Hotel). The congregation then moved to what is now the Baptist Church in Murray Place where they remained until 1970 when the amalgamation with Allan Park took place.

War memorials for both churches are situated in the vestibule, directly opposite the main door. (Great to see their prominent position; not great for photographing when the sun is streaming in and you can't close the doors for fear of seeming unwelcoming of visitors to the conference!) There is also a memorial window in the Sanctuary and a wooden tablet in front of it with the names of those killed in the second world war:
A G Adams senior
A G Adams Junior (father and son)
R Auchinvole
A Dick
J S Fleming
J S Glen
L A Goldie
J T Horsburgh
J K Mc Call
A Munnoch
W J A Murray
J Richardson
N J W Smith

Allan Park Church memorial for the Great War reads:
To the Glory of God and to the lasting memory of the men of Allan Park Church, Stirling who died in the Great War, 1914-1919
The names are in two columns, in alphabetical order, and give rank/regiment as well. Below the names it reads:

There are FOUR men with the name William Taylor on the Stirling memorial; one lived in Williamfield Avenue which is in St Ninian’s (separate from the town at the time) so I’m guessing he wasn’t on a memorial on a town centre church. William G Taylor is on the Allan Park memorial. One I can’t find.
This is a possibility.

Grave Reference: E. 6.

Additional Information:

Likewise, there are two men called James Young on the Stirling memorial but one lived in Newhouse (also in St Ninian’s) so I’m guessing this is the correct one.
YOUNG, JAMES
Rank: Private

Other detail formerly 9708 A. & S.H.

One way to check which William Taylor and James Young are the right ones is to see if the church records show an address; sometimes the Communion rolls are available in the local archives.

I haven’t done any research on WW2 casualties.

Sandra

John Kilgour Baker appears on umpteen memorials:

St. Andrew’s Church Plaque (ex Rhinsdale Church), Baillieston
Coatbridge High School Memorial,
Coatbridge Technical School Memorial,
Stirling Civic Memorial
and now we know he's also on Allan Park Church, Stirling.

Thanks Sandra! Very Happy

For some reason, I've been unable to edit Sandra's posts to insert her photos for Allan Park South Church's Memorials, so here they are.

This is Allan Park Church's Memorial (on the right)

As of 1st April 2020, Allan Park South Church united with St Columba's Church to form Stirling Park Church, worshipping in the St Columba's (Peter Memorial) building. I have been assured that moving the war memorials is "in hand" but due to the current lockdown goodness knows when that will happen. When the restrictions ease, I'll bring the matter up - again!

At a Kirk Session meeting last night (14th April 2021), it was announced that the three war memorials from the former Allan Park Church and the former South Church have been removed and are in storage in Park Church meantime. Once restrictions allow, a decision will be made as to where they will be displayed.
