I was talking to the staff at the Arbroath Signal Tower Museum about two Arbroath born men who were killed in action on 25th April 1915 .

One Pte 16661 ARTHUR BINNIE , 1/7th Argyll & Sutherland Hdrs is listed but I cant find any record for

PTE WILLIAM WEBSTER JARRETT , 2nd Seaforth Highlanders killed on 25th April 1915 near St Julien . The Arbroath roll of honour book lists him as being 32 years of age and he had served in the 2nd Seaforths from 1901 prior to being called up at the start of the Great War . Two of his brothers served in the Seaforths and another in the Black Watch .

I cant find any entry on the CWGC index for Pte William Webster JARRETT from Arbroath and he is not listed that I can see or find on the SNWM website either .

Maybe ive missed the spelling of the casualty and I tried variations of the spelling of Jarrett too

Hopefully Pte WW Jarrett , is listed on both indexes and on the Soldiers Died index as well under a variation of the surname spelling .

Best wishes

The soldier that is not listed on the SNWM and CWGC and soldiers died in the Gr war is the SEAFORTH HIGHLANDER

pte WILLIAM WEBSTER JARRETT , 2nd Bn Seaforth Hdrs from Arbroath

I found the Pte Binnie listed on the various indexes which is good Anne

Strange that Pt Jarrett is not listed on the CWGC , SNWM and the Soldiers died index

I see also Anne that on the other roll of honour for Arbroath published by the Arbroath herald the casualty is recorded as being

Pte William JARRET (one T )

kind regards

Thanks Anne & Ken

that looks like the same man

Pte 9564 William GARRAT ,. Seaforth Highlanders
kia 25 April 1915

details tie in thanks

Strange why they had two variations of his surname and he was 32 so not under aged and he was married and had served in the same bn from 1901 and recalled in 1914 war says the Arbroath roll of honour book published by the Arbroath Guide newspaper . Has photo of Pte Jarratt or Garrat

Not having any luck finding William Webster Jarrett in any Military database.

By co-incidence, there's a William Webster Jarrett interred in Arbroath.

See: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=129870021&ref=acom

A note on the above site: "Jarret, William Webster buried on: 20 September 1993 recorded at: Arbroath Eastern (Angus) date of death 15 September 1993"

A descendant maybe?

Anne

I queried this one a few years ago, Garret(t) is most definately Jarret(t), it's how his name was recorded by the military and as far as things go it cannot be changed.

Thank you for your input on this topic and good he is recorded , Wonder if the CWGC and SNWM will correct the entries if a birth and marriage certificate is presented as evidence as he had no reason to change his name spelling as be was an ex 1901 Seaforth highlanders and well over the 18 year old age

Thanks

Pat - you mentioned earlier that "Two of his brothers served in the Seaforths and another in the Black Watch"
Could this be GEORGE JARRETT Pte.9804 Seaforths and ARTHUR W. JARRETT Pte.9499 Seaforths and L/Cpl. 203334 Royal Highlanders attached to King's African Rifles ??????

Unless you can find a document with his soldiers number on it, they won't accept BMD's as proof linking the two men.

Many men had names misspelled by recruiting Sergerants and never had them corrected. I imagine mens numbers were used more often than not in the army for identification, so it wasn't a burning issue to the men concerned how their names was recorded for administrative purposes.
Many mic's do have medals remarked as being returned for corrections though.

The brother in the Black Watch was John, in the 4th/5th.
He was wounded and when healed was sent to 14th Btn Royal Fusiliers.
