Gladys Cuttle has sent me a newspaper report of the unveiling of the memorial. I'll post more details later but in part it reads:

....the memorial , which is placed in the plantation near the station at the junction of the Dumfries and Dalbeattie roads....

Gladys sent me the article as well which includes a photo. Undoubtedly it remains in its original location so the RCAHMS entry is wrong.

The Castle Douglas War Memorial was unveiled on Sunday 1 May 1921 by Lt. Colonel John McKie, DSO, a resident of Castle Douglas.
According to the Stewartry RoH, Colonel McKie was gazetted in May 1875 into the Scottish Borders Militia (later the KOSB) He served in South Africa in 1900 and 1902. Awarded the DSO and the Queen's Medal (3 bars) he retired in 1903 as a Major (Hon. Lt.Col.)
Mobilised in August 1914 he was appointed purchasing Remount Officer in the Remount Service.

A curiosity - there are three Canadians listed on the Memorial, one of whom is Pte. Geo. Dempster. For some time I've been convinced that this should have been his brother William Dempster. The newspaper report lists the Names of the Fallen and has Pte. Wm. Dempster.
All other names are identical to the memorial. I wonder if anyone noticed at the time?

The sculptor Charles Pilkington D'or Jackson's business papers are lodged in the National Library, Edinburgh, Accesssion Number 7445. In Box 2, File 57 there is a letter from Jackson to architect F.C. Mears giving costs for the three bronze panels. There is no further correspondance to confirm the work went ahead but Jackson worked regularly with Mears at this time so it is probable that he was responsible for the bronze work.
