Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald 1 September 1916

The great war is taking terrible toll of the lives of the brightest and bravest and best of our young men. There are few who have not lost a friend or relative in the vast holocaust that is shaking the world to its very foundations, and it is only when a relative or a personal friend falls that the extent of the sacrifices that are being made are fully realised. On Friday of last week the sad news reached Kilmarnock through the medium of a telegram from the Records Office, Hamilton, that Second Lieutenant Aubrey P. Haggo, Royal Warwicks, eldest son of Mr John Haggo, Town Chamberlain, had been killed in action on Aug.18th. It is only seven weeks ago last Tuesday since Lieut. Haggo left Kilmarnock, after a brief furlough at home, for the front, and the sad tidings of his death created a profound sorry in the town, where he was well known and highly respected by a large circle of friends. The day before he was killed he received a slight wound on the forearm and after having it attended to he returned to his company. He had only been five weeks at the front when he met his end. Lieut. Haggo was in his 24th year. The deceased officer got his commission in the 3/4th Royal Scots Fusiliers, and went through a course of training with his regiment at Ripon and Catterick in England. He took a special course of bombing at Oakley, Yorks, and proved so efficient that he was complimented by his superior officers in charge of the School of Instruction. The R.S.F were asked to furnish six officers for English regiments, and Lieut. Haggo was one of four who volunteered for service. He was attached to the Royal Warwicks, as bombing officer, and was serving with that regiment when he was killed. Three weeks ago we published a letter from him in which he gave a very vivid account of scenes at the front. Lieut. Haggo had a high sense of duty and responsibility, and while with the R.S.F. was held in very high esteem by the soldiers under his immediate command.
Before obtaining his commission he was a member of the London Scottish, and was with his regiment when they made that famous charge on the 31st of October, 1914, at Mes ines. He came through the charge scathless, but afterwards contracted dysentery, and was invalided home.
Previous to the outbreak of war Lieut. Haggo was employed with the firm of Messrs Steel Brothers, export and import merchants, London, and, but for the war intervening, would have gone to Rangoon in October, 1914, to take up duties for the firm in their offices there. He received his early business training in his father’s office, and latterly in the Commercial Bank under Mr Balfour, the agent in Kilmarnock.
Lieut. Haggo was of a bright and cheery disposition, and was a young man of great promise in his business profession. To his parents the sympathy of the whole community is extended in their great sorrow. Another brother of Lieut. Haggo is at the front with the New Zealanders.
Since writing the above, we learn Lieut. Haggo’s parents have received communications from the Lieut.-Colonel and Captain of the Royal Warwicks, the battalion to which he was attached. From these it is understood that the deceased officer met his death from a bullet from a machine gun, while gallantly leading his men in an attack on the enemy trenches. The bullet pierced his throat, and death was instantaneous. His officers speak in very high and appreciative terms of the deceased’s gallantry, and state that it was largely due to his bravery, and those along with him, that the attack was brought to a successful issue.
