After the success of our Open Day last November in the Mitchell library we have been invited by East Renfrewshire Heritage Services to host an event at the Barrhead Foundry, Main Street, Barrhead, East Renfrewshire G78 1SW
on Saturday 14th March 2015, 11am - 3.00pm.
Also at the event will be volunteers from the Neilston War Memorial Association.

The following is an extract from the publicity issued by East Ren.

"Volunteers from the Scottish Military Re-search Group and the Neilston War Memorial Association will be on hand to offer advice on researching your ancestor’s military history. Heritage staff will also be there to show you the resources available at East Renfrewshire Libraries.
Bring along any information that you already have and we will help you take your next steps. We would also be delighted to copy any of your photographs or information to help us build a record of the part local peo-ple played in the Great War."

I am getting ready to answer questions by using this site and seeing if it is possible to be helpful even at a distance. I have my large database to do lookups and then I can post them. I have from Marykirk, Kincardineshire to Morayshire with some info for Orkney and Shetland. I can't say I have all Gordon Highlanders but I will happily do a lookups

Thank you to those who attended today, it was a very successful day and I think we managed to find some information for everyone who came for assistance.

One of the ladies I spoke to on the day has no relatives to leave her granddad's set of medals to when the time comes. The medals are a fairly significant set:- pip, squeak and Wilfred (it's a mons star with clasp), WW2 Defence medal and a mercantile marine medal - he was merchant navy and rnvr and served in the royal naval division.

I thought perhaps she could offer them to the Royal Navy museum in Portsmouth or alternatively to her granddad's old school (if she knows it and it still exists), failing that..........offer them to Glasgow city council perhaps for use in the Glasgow Museum's Resource centre at Nitshill then they would be available for use wherever these items get loaned to.

Obviously she should put with the medals a brief biography and a photo.

Anyone have any other ideas?

I would look at smaller local museums rather than Glasgow Museums. If they are donated there then I don't see them ever going on display. They would go in a drawer and effectively be forgotten.

Received the following email today which was addressed to all who took part at the Open Day, David McNay, Paul Goodwin, John & Margaret Houston, Ian Strickland.

Dear all,

Just wanted to say a big thank you for all your hard work on Saturday. We were really pleased with the way it all went and I think you sent lots of people away with great information and inspired them to do further research themselves. We really appreciate the fact that you gave up your own time and are so generous in sharing your research and expertise.
We received great feedback from those who attended which I will collate and pass back to you as soon as possible.
It was a pleasure to work with you all and we hope we can do so again.

Kind regards,

Amanda & Janice
