|
|
The Glasgow Herald, Friday, 6th. July, 1917.
"Deaths on Service.
GRAY.- Killed in action, on 6th June, Captain David Gray, R.G.A. (late Sergeant, S.R.), of Union Bank of Scotland Limited, Glasgow, aged 31, second son of Mr and Mrs Ogilvy Gray, Lerwick."
Same publication, Saturday, 7th. July, 1917:- "CASUALTIES Notes on Officers R.G.A. Captain DAVID GRAY Reported killed in action. Captain David Gray, R.G.A., reported killed in action on June 6th, was a native of Lerwick and educated at the Anderson Institute there. He was on the head office staff of the Union Bank of Scotland (Limited) Glasgow, and a member of the Institution of Bankers in Scotland. An enthusiastic member of the old Bankers' Company Scottish Rifles (looks like), and holding the Territorial Service Medal, Captain Gray went to France as sergeant with his battalion in November, 1914, and did excellent work as orderly sergeant until his return in autumn, 1915, to take up a commission in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Soon after his return to France in the spring of 1916 he was promoted lieutenant and acted as adjutant for his division. He was later gazetted captain and at the time of his death had been recommended for further promotion. Captain Gray was a member of St. George's-in-the-Fields Church and vice-president of the Glasgow Orkney and Shetland Association and his genial disposition had endeared him to a large circle of friends in Glasgow." (Hope that's okay - it's a very difficult read and very blurred scan.)
Medal index ticket records previous service:- 5/Sco. Rif. Sjt. 5321; Commission R.G.A. Cap.
5th. November, 1914 (it does not say but I expect this date refers to entry to France and consequent eligibility for the 1914 Star).
Address:- 29, Commercial Street, Lerwick.
Medal Award Roll records:- Apptd. Commn. in R.G.A. Spec. Res. 7th. November, 1915.
Army register soldier's backpay records Thomas Watson, Esq., Cox and Co.
1891 Census Shetland, Lerwick, Ross Court, recorded (transcription):- David Gray (5), son, born Lerwick; Ogilvie Gray (40), Seaman, born Shetland, Bressay; Helen Gray (39), Wife, born Bressay; siblings.

The VC commemorative stone for Lieutenant William Bruce of the 59th Schinde Rifles, died 19/12/1914 is also now at this memorial. This is interesting as he is not on the memorial itself, and some sources say that he was born in Edinburgh |

So why is it here, as these always go to the Birth Place. Is this yet another error in the saga of these stones?
Apparently this is an exception to the rule.
He was born in Edinburgh, where he also has a stone.
This stone is because his father was born at Symbister, Whalsay. He had holidayed extensively on Shetland and was well known both on Whalsay and at Dunrossness on South Mainland.
He is commemorated in the County Roll of Honour Book, published several years before this County Memorial was erected. Officially the Roll of Honour was supposed to be the definitive list of Shetland Men killed. However this is not the only variance.
There is no explanation in the voluminous detail, now held at Shetland Archives, as to why these variances occurred.
He is also not commemorated on the memorial on Whalsay |

By the way I have now rationalised the WMR numbers, and 6070 is the only one referring to this memorial.
That report now has fully detailed information. WW2 names have been input and WW1 names are in process of being input.
I had hoped to do that last week, but typical Shetland January weather thought otherwise. |

This man is
Able Seaman
TAIT, MAGNUS T.
Died 12/08/1915
Aged 27
S.S. "Jacona" (Dundee)
Mercantile Marine
Son of Elizabeth Tait, of 5, Hamilton St., Leith. Born in Shetland.
It helps to know that on this memorial MM means Merchant Marine, not Military Medal which explains why there are so many MM's on the memorial. |
