At 24 General Hospital, on the 12th April (sic), as the result of wounds received in action, Matthew White, Lieutenant, R.S.F. and of W. Affleck & Son, cabinetmakers, Ayr."

Mr MATTHEW WHITE.-
Died of wounds. Official intimation was received in Ayr yesterday that Lieutenant Matthew White, Royal Scots Fusiliers, who was dangerously wounded on the 11th inst., (sic) died the following day. He was a partner in the firm W. Affleck and Son, cabinetmakers, Ayr. He went on active service five weeks ago. He was 39 years of age and leaves a widow and two children, who reside at 32 Ashgrove Street, Ayr."

M'BURNIE.
- At sea, on 15th April, Chief Officer Robert M'Burnie, beloved husband of Jessie Gibson, 6 Citadel Place. Ayr."

Page 8 of The Glasgow Herald issue of Monday, 21st. May, 1917, carries an interesting eye witness account of the sinking of S.S. Cameronia written by an officer in a letter to friends. Extract from story, The Lost Cameronia:- "As the ship tilted for the final plunge the captain blew her siren, and then with the officer commanding the troops and the chief officer," (this is Robert McBurnie), "who had remained till the last with him, went down a life-line to the torpedo-boat destroyer. The chief officer was the only naval officer, I think, to lose his life. He dived from the torpedo-boat destroyer to help two Tommies who were stuggling in the water, and was pulled down by them."

"Deaths on Service.
DUFF.-
Previously reported wounded and missing, now officially presumed to have been killed in action at Beaumont Hamel on 18th November, 1916, Second Lieut. W. Duff, H.L.I., aged 20 years, only and beloved son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Duff, 37 Park Circus, Ayr, and formerly of Kay Park Crescent, Kilmarnock."
