PostPosted: Thu Feb 19, 2015 11:25 am    Post subject: WW1 - 2nd. Lieut. George Deans LUGTON, Scottish Rifles. Reply with quote

Recorded on the Roll of Honour at 268, Whitehill Street, but the Unit listed is King's Royal Rifle Corps (?) Unit listed appears to be an error based upon the following:-

The Glasgow Herald, Saturday, 15th December, 1917.
"Deaths on Service.
LUGTON.
- Killed in action, on 30th November, Second Lieut. George Deans Lugton, Scottish Rifles, attached Headquarters - Infantry Brigade, younger son of the late Thomas W. P. Lugton, People's Palace, Glasgow."

SNWM - WW1
Surname LUGTON
Forename G D
Rank 2nd Lieut
Service number
Decoration
Place of birth Chicago
Date of death 30 November 1918
Theatre of death Unknown
Cause of death Unknown
SNWM roll THE CAMERONIANS (SCOTTISH RIFLES)
Unit name Unknown Unit attached to THE CAMERONIANS SCOTTISH RIFLES
Other detail 8th Bn.

SDGW - Glasgow pals - 15984 Highland Light Infantry 17th Battalion. France 22.11.1915. Later 9295 Sjt Army Cyclist Corps; later 2nd Lt Scottish Rifles (commissioned 24/10/1916). Arrived o/seas with ACC.

CWGC - LUGTON, George Deans
Rank: Second Lieutenant.
Date of Death: 30/11/1917. Age: 22.
Regiment/Service: Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) 8th Bn.
Grave Reference: III. D. 25.
Cemetery: CAGNICOURT BRITISH CEMETERY
Additional Information:Son of Thomas Wright Peter Lugton and Helen Deans Lugton of Scotland.

CWGC - Grave registration document (the printed register) corrected by hand from original entry for year death date which had been 1918. Graves registration report form from 1923 clearly states 8/Cameronians, however, the next two unknown British soldier casualties listed are noted as being K.R.R.R. casualties. This maybe the source of the Unit error in the Roll of Honour.

1901 Census Lanarks., Glasgow, Dennistoun, 5, Wood Street, Common Stair, recorded (transcription):- George Lugton (6), Scholar, born United States; Head of household, Thomas Lugton (46), Advertisement Canvasser, born Roxburghs., Kelso; Helen Lugton (39), wife, born England; siblings born Canada, and Glasgow.

Backpay amounting to over £104 was sent to Nominated Executor George Tod, Esq., in 1918 followed by £15 War Gratuity in 1920.

Andrew - I'm intrigued by the history of Lugton's father, Thomas.
On your 1901 census details he is an Advertising Canvasser and George Deans Lugton's name is on The Scotsman memorial.
http://www.scotlandswar.ed.ac.uk/sites/default/files/pdf_Scotsman_War_Memorials.pdf

However Thomas is also named here
http://parkheadhistory.com/?page_id=4308
"There lived at No.268 Whitehill Street, until his death a few years ago as a result of a car accident, Mr. Thomas Lugton Curator of the People's Palace - and there is a photo of him in this role, at the Mitchell Library.
http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/index.php?a=district&s=item&key=dYToxOntpOjA7czoxMzoiR2xhc2dvdyBHcmVlbiI7fQ==&pg=28

How do you go from selling advertising space to become curator of a museum (or was it the other way round?)

He died in 1915 in Dennistoun aged 60.

Yes you're right, Ken. I don't know how they do it.

Wee bit more I have come across which explains the K.R.R. association on the Roll.

The Glasgow Herald, Thursday, 13th December, 1917.
"CASUALTIES, Notes on Officers.
Mr GEORGE LUGTON.
- Killed. Second Lieutenant George Deans Lugton was the only son of the late Mr Thos. Lugton, superintendent and curator of the People's Palace and Museum, Glasgow. When the war broke out Mr Lugton was on the reporting staff of "The Scotsman" in Glasgow. Joining the H.L.I. in September, 1914, he afterwards proceeded on active service. About a year ago he was given a commission in the Scottish Rifles. Returning to the front he was attached to the King's Royal Rifles. Soon afterwards he was appointed brigade bombing officer, and more recently, brigade intelligence officer. Mr Lugton was 23 years of age and was born in Chicago, USA."

Recorded on the roll of Honour at 79, John Knox Street.

Native of Wellington, New Zealand.

Not listed SNWM.

CWGC: FORSYTH, Samuel
Rank: Serjeant. Service No: 4/400.
Date of Death: 24/8/1918. Age: 25.

Awards: V.C.

Cemetery: ADANAC MILITARY CEMETERY, MIRAUMONT, France.
Additional Information: Son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Forsyth, of Wellington, New Zealand; husband of Mary S. Forsyth, 79, John Knox St., Glasgow, Scotland.

Marriage: 1917, Blythswood, 644/10 78. Samuel Forsyth/ Mary Gardner.

Citation:
An extract from "The London Gazette," No. 30967, dated 18th Oct., 1918, records the following:-"For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty in attack. On nearing the objective, his company came under heavy machine-gun fire. Through Serjt. Forsyth's dashing leadership and total disregard of danger, three machine-gun positions were rushed and the crews taken prisoner before they could inflict many casualties on our troops. During subsequent advance his company came under heavy fire from several machine guns, two of which he located by a daring reconnaissance. In his endeavour to gain support from a Tank, he was wounded, but after having the wound bandaged, he again got in touch with the Tank, which in the face of very heavy fire from machine guns and anti-Tank guns, he endeavoured to lead with magnificent coolness to a favourable position. The Tank, however, was put out of action. Serjt. Forsyth then organised the Tank crew and several of his men into a section, and led them to a position where the machine guns could be outflanked. Always under heavy fire, he directed them into positions which brought about a retirement of the enemy machine guns and enabled the advance to continue. This gallant N.C.O. was at that moment killed by a sniper. From the commencement of the attack until the time of his death Serjt. Forsyth's courage and coolness, combined with great power of initiative proved an invaluable incentive to all who were with him and he undoubtedly saved many casualties among his comrades."

Serjt. Forsyth's wife, Mary Sked Gardner or Forsyth died at Belfast City Hospital in 1970 and was interred at Cathcart Cemetery ... "....in her 76th year, for many years a nurse and Christian social worker in Belfast." His V. C. medal was sold after her death and is now part of the Lord Ashcroft collection and on display (by rotation) with over 170 others, at the Imperial War Museum, London.

His father died in 1919 and on his headstone (Karori Cemetery) Samuel's mother, Grace, had his name added with the words "He loved honour more than he feared death". In 2011 he was depicted on a set of New Zealand postage stamps featuring N. Z. Victoria Cross awardees.

Mike,
I am researching the names on the Glasgow RoH.
At this moment I've identified 4000 names that for whatever reason are not on the RoH.
John McCreadie is one such name which will be added to the updated version of the RoH.
