Unveiled 4th December 1920 by General Sir Francis Davies K.C.B.

As you will see the church behind is no longer in use and there is only a scattering of homes nearby. The names are starting to weather away through time which is very sad.

At the unveiling the General had said:- "This monument, and the names on it, will stand for all time as an inspiration to the generations yet to come"

....perhaps not

PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER: 08.12.1920

KINFAUNS HONOURS ITS DEAD
UNVEILING OF MEMORIAL

Never before in the annals of the Parish of Kinfauns had a more impressive or inspiring ceremonial been witnesses than that which took place, in presence of a large concourse of people, on Saturday afternoon, when the monument to their fallen heroes was unveiled.
The memorial is simple but chaste in its design, and the site chosen is altogether admirable (and here a word of praise is due to Mr Thomas Blackley, Seggieden, who superinteded the construction of the surrounding terrace), commanding as it does the opening estuary of the ample Tay, while as a fitting background stand out the beautiful wooded hills. Surely here nature conspired to lend her tribute to the glorious dead.
The assembled company was not only large but thoroughly representative. many relatives of the departed came - some a long distance - to acknowledge the honour paid to their loved ones; ex-Servicemen came to pay their last respects to their fallen comrades; and from all parts of the parish came young and old eager to pay their common homage.
The order of service left nothing to be desired. Decorum and solemnity characterised the whole of it. The historical old paraphrases selected for singing were such as appealed to the Scottish mind and heart, awakening the old and hallowed memories of many sacred occasions of the past,
In introducing General Sir Francis Davies, K.C.B., who unveiled the monument, Colonel Drummond Hay, the chairman of the committee, made an appropriate and eloquent reference to the heartiness of the response to the call to arms made by the young men of the district and their distinguished bravery on the field of battle.
Equally well chosen and touching were the words of the general in his picture of the devastation of the Somme and the ruins of Thiepval. In his closing words he expressed the hope that the monument just unveiled would stand for all time as an inspiration for generations yet to come.
An added pathos was given to the proceedings by the playing of 'The Flowers of the Forest' and the sounding of the 'Last Post'.
Rev. R.S. Davidson, minister of the parish, offered the dedication prayer, and after the benediction was pronounced and the National Anthem sung, many beautiful wreaths were reverently placed at the base of the monument. So passed the great and solemn occasion, the memory of which will last through all the years.

From The Scotsman 6th December 1920:

"Kinpauns (sic) - Lieut-General Sir Francis Davies, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O., General Officer Commanding the Scottish Command, unveiled on Saturday afternoon an obelisk in memory of twenty-four men belonging to the Perthshire parishes of Kinfauns and Kinnoull (Landward), who had fallen in the Great War."

Shame they spelt the name Kinpauns at the beginning of the article.

Thanks for posting this article Paul. I knew Kinnoull was a parish but I didn't think they had a war memorial - or that they joined with Perth but it seems they fell in with Kinnoull. I'll have a good look at this one again.

Not listed:

William Miller McKie was born in Canfauns, Perthshire, on 9 December 1884. A Farmer by occupation, he enlisted in the 31st (Alberta) Battalion at Calgary in November 1914. During his subsequent period of training in Canada, it is recorded in the regimental history that ‘On one occasion Captain Macpherson was making a round of the ‘C’ Company quarters when, on entering one of the cubicles, he came upon one Private McKie lying in one of the middle bunks smoking a pipe. McKie observed his superior officer and, anxious to show that respect for authority which was being rapidly instilled into him, but as yet somewhat lacking in knowledge of military etiquette, solemnly saluted with pipe in mouth while still stretched prone upon his bunk’.

McKie arrived in England in May 1915 and proceeded to France in September 1915, where in May 1916 he was attached for duty with the 2nd Canadian Tunnelling Company. He was listed as ‘missing’ on 2 June 1916, and was later listed as killed on that date. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial; sold with copied service and other papers.

Are there any plans to do anything with this memorial before the names are too worn to read?

Adam,

I can't answer your question I'm afraid. Coincidentally, I was on my way to Dundee last week and took a detour from the A90 up to Kinfauns as I was curious to see how it was looking. You can still just about see the names but I'm not sure how long it will be until they disappear altogether. Didn't take photographs as I was short for time.
