WW1 - JOHN SIMPSON

John Simpson was the husband of Janet Callan. He was the son of James Simpson & Ann Moore.

This is his marriage announcement from 'The Dunoon Observer and Cowal Watchman' - Wed. morning, March 26, 1890
Marriage. - At Eden Villa, Dunoon, on the 24th inst., by the Rev John Cameron D.D. assisted by the Rev John M Callan [brother of the bride],
Captain John Simpson, s.s.Astral, Liverpool, to Jessie, daughter of Mr Richard Callan, road surveyor.

'The Dunoon Observer' - Sat. 10 Feb. 1917
The Anchor Line California has been sunk. She was torpedoed without warning. Thirty of the crew and 13 passengers are reported missing.

'The Dunoon Observer' - Sat. 17 Feb. 1917
The Sinking of the California. - There is no doubt that the two missing men belonging to Dunoon who were members of the crew of the
ill-fated California, torpedoed by German subs last week, have been drowned. John Simpson, extra third officer and William Eadie, assistant
purser, were both seen in the water. The former was a strong swimmer, but evidently was unable to keep afloat till assistance arrived.

Dunoon Cemetery - In loving memory of Captain John Simpson born 6th August 1856, lost at sea on SS California 7th Feb 1917; also his wife Janet Callen born 25th April 1864 died 2nd June 1931.

Hansard 30 Mar 1917 - Commons Sitting - Food Supplies.
Mr Watt: asked the Prime Minister whether the government propose to pay any compensation to the relatives of those who lost their lives by
the sinking of the ‘California’ on 7th Feb last, in view of the fact that the steamer was carrying foodstuffs for the use of the government?
Mr Roberts: The Prime Minister has asked me to answer this question. The dependants of the officers and seamen of the ss. ‘California’ who
lost their lives will receive compensation eqivalent to that payable under the War (Compensation) Acts to the dependants of officers of the
Fleet auxiliaries. The payments will be made through the Liverpool and London War Risks Association. Eleven of the claims have already been
settled.

The Glasgow Herald, Tuesday, 11th December, 1917.
"Deaths on Service.
MACFARLANE.-
Killed in action, on 24th November, 1917, Private Neil Macfarlane, A. and S. H., aged 30 years, beloved husband of Annie Macfarlane, 37 Pretoria Crescent, Dunoon."

Some Service Records exist for this soldier.

Army spell his surname (McFarlane) contrary to his signature (Macfarlane) from the start when he completed the Attestation form at Dunoon, 12th December, 1915. Approved Stirling Castle, 11th October, 1916. By 1919 the surname is being spelt correctly on some forms but that hasn't filtered through to SNWM or CWGC below. At least Dunoon War Memorial has it right.

Age at Attestation:- 28 years 4 months.
Address:- 37, Pretoria Crescent, Dunoon.
Occupation:- Boat Hirer. Married. One child.
