Alva - Clackmannan District
UKNIWM Ref no. 6029
The Alva war memorial is a stylised freestone celtic cross with a tall smooth shaft with wheel-head and celtic knotwork pattern carved on the face. The cross stands on a stepped pedestal and has a downturned bronze sword on the face of the shaft. There is alo the winged head of a cherub carved on the face of the pedestal. The commemoration and names of the dead are listed on bronze panels set on the faces of the pedestal. The monument stands on a raised, terraced enclosure in gardens on Beauclerc Street.

Photos taken on a much better day.
The panels look as though they've been cleaned up.
And on the back

Has anyone transcribed this memorial?
I was having a wee look and thought the small panel would be the WW2 casualties and the larger ones would be WW1 but I now think they're all mixed up! Either that or I'm having an off day!
If they're all mixed up (and I'm not having an off day), why would the ones in the small panel be separate from the rest?
Put me put of my misery somebody!

Anne
I'd say the panel in the first photograph is WW2 names.
1. There are fewer names and 2. There are a few RAF ranks.
The other three panels follow each other alphabetically.
Probably what happened was the front panel was recast after WW2 and the text "In everlasting memory etc.. " which took up the whole plaque before was squashed into the top third.

I thought that initially Adam (they're usually that way) but I picked out some of the more unusual names and they were WW1?
I'm away to have another go . . . . .
Anne
Added later: OK - so I am having an off day! I have no idea what I was doing earlier but right enough, the small panel is WW2.
