THOMAS ANGUS
Thomas Angus – age 27 – Private (6871) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Thomas landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 14 August 1914 but he was killed a month later.
Born 1887 in Dunbar, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Helen (Robertson) Angus (died 1906) and of of the George Angus of Innerwick.
His eldest brother John of Skateraw, Innerwick was named as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 14 September 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France.


ALEXANDER BRIGGS
Alexander Briggs – age – Private (29628) 1st Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment.
Alexander as a farm servant at Innerwick Farm when he enlisted as Driver (T/3/027045) in the Army Service Corps in December 1914. He was posted to France in March 1916 and transferred to the East Yokshires in November 1917. Alexander was captured in March 1918 and died in the in the Ecole Moyenne in Fleurus, Hainaut. He was re-interred at Tournai in February 1921.
Born 1897 in Innerwick as Alexander Runciman Briggs. Son of the late Thomas Watt Briggs (died 1912) and of the late Joan Manderson (Runciman) Briggs (died 1913) of Innerwick. His brother Hugh of Blackdykes North Berwick and of Headerwick, Dunbar was named as his legatee.
Died on Service on 24 October 1918 and buried in Tournai Communal Cemetery Allied Extension, Belgium.


WILLIAM COCKBURN
William Cockburn – age 26 – Private (241784) 1/5th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was a groom with the factor on Thurston Estate, Innerwick when he enlisted in 1916. His twin brother David was a policeman in Musselburgh.
Born 1892 in Duns, Berwickshire. Son of the late William Cockburn (died 1908) and of Alice (Trotter) Cockburn of Thurston, Innerwick.
Killed in Action on 28 July 1918 and buried in Buzancy Military Cemetery, France.

FRANCIS DIGNAN
Francis Dignan – age 24 – Private (43588) 15th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Frank was a joiner to trade. He was discharged from the Army in April 1919 and he died of a hip infection at the family home of Crowhill, Innerwick.
Born 1895 at Dolphingsion, Prestonpans, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of John and Isabella (McKay) Dignan of Crowhill, Innerwick.
Died on 23 February 1920 and buried in Innerwick Parish Churchyard. (CWG)


GEORGE GLASS
George Glass – age 22 – Lance Corporal (1619) 1/6th (Perthshire) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
George was a gardener at St. Mary's Tower, Torrhill, Birnham, Perthshire when he enlisted in Dunkeld and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed two months later. He was buried in Wangerie Post Old Military Cemetery, Laventie and was re-interred at Fleurbaix in 1920.
Born 1893 in Coldingham, Berwickshire. Son of Richard and Janet (Bertram) Glass of Skateraw, Innerwick.
Killed in Action on 15 July 1915 and buried in Rue-David Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France.
Also named on the Dunkeld and Little Dunked Parishes War Memorial.


JOHN GOLIGHTLY
John Golightly – age 22 – Private (S/8237) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
In 1911 John was a carter on the farm at Thorntonloch, Innerwick. He joined his battalion in France in March 1915.
Born 1895 in Innerwick as John Walker Golightly. Son of Mein and Elizabeth (Walker) Golightly of Thorntonloch, Innerwick.
Killed in Action on 31 July 1917 and buried in Ecoust Military Cemetery, Ecoust-St. Mein, France.


THOMAS GRAY
Thomas Gray – age 26 – Private (15345) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Thomas landed with his battalion in France in July 1915. He was captured at Vermelles in May 1916 and died two and a half years later in the Working Camp at Wulkau near Stendel. Thomas was re-interred in Berlin in 1922/23.
Born 1892 in Cockburnspath, Berwickshire. Son of Thomas and Janet (Lyall) Gray of Cove, Cockburnspath.
Died on Service on 23 October 1918 and buried in Berlin South-Western Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Cockburnspath Parish War Memorial and on the Oldhamstocks Parish War Memorial in East Lothian.

WILLIAM HILL
William Hill, Military Medal and Bar– age 26 – Lance Corporal (34468) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
William died in the 56th Casualty Clearing Station at Grevillers. The announcements of the awards of his two Military Medals were made in January and March 1919.
Born 1892 at Mountalban, Coldingham, Berwickshire. Son of William and Isabella (Aitchison) Hill of Thurston Smithy, Thorntonloch, Innerwick and of Hedderwickhill and Biel North Lodge, Dunbar, East Lothian.
Died of Wounds on 28 September 1918 and buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Dunbar Burgh and Parish War Memorial.


WILLIAM INGLIS
William Gordon Inglis – age 24 – Private (325213) 5th/6th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was a gamekeeper at Aikengall, Innerwick when he enlisted in Cockburnspath as Private (1044) in the newly formed Territorial 8th Royal Scots in April 1914. He was mobilised in August 1914 and posted to the 2/8th Battalion. He went to France in June 1917 but he contracted rheumatic fever and he was evacuated home in August. It was March 1918 before he was posted to the 5th/6th Royal Scots in France.
Born 1894 in Crawford, Lanarkshire. Son of Thomas and Margaret (Izard) Inglis of Leigh Grange, Maybole, Ayrshire.
Killed in Action on 11 August 1918 and buried in Bouchoir New British Cemetery, France.


GEORGE LEADBETTER
George Leadbetter – age 23 – Private (40339) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George enlisted as Private (1492) in the Royal Scots but he was posted to the KOSB in France.
Born 1893 in Swinton, Berwickshire. Son of George and Jane (McKay) Leadbetter of Thurston Mains, Innerwick.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

JOHN MYLES

John Edward Myles – age 19 – Private (S/20337) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John served his apprenticeship as a gardener at Broxmouth Park near Dunbar, East Lothian and was employed at Drumlanrig Castle in Dumfriesshire when he enlisted.
Born 1897 in Dunbar, East Lothian. Son of William and Jessie (Harris) Myles of Eastbarns, near Dunbar and of 1 Silver Street, Dunbar, East Lothian.
Died of Wounds on 26 September 1916 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Dunbar Burgh and Parish War Memorial and on the Penpont Parish War Memorial in Dumfriesshire.


WILLIAM PAXTON
William Paxton – age 23 – Private (S/13688) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
William was an assistant shepherd at Outerstow Hill, Gorebridge, Midlothian when he enlisted in June 1916. He served with the 1st Seaforths in Mesopotamia from October but he was wounded at Sanna-i-yat in February 1917 and invalided home in October. He was posted to the 1/5th Seaforths in France in January 1918 but in March he was again invalided home. He returned to France and joined the 7th Seaforths.
Born 1895 at Elmscleugh, Innerwick. Son of James and Catherine (Skeldon) Paxton of Elmscleugh, Innerwick.
Killed in Action on 2 August 1918 and buried in Caestre Military Cemetery, France.


JAMES RANKIN
James Rankin – age 23 – Private (266951) 1/6th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
James enlisted as Private (4364) in the Seaforths.
Born 1892 in Whitsome, Berwickshire as James Aitchison Rankin. Son of the late Elizabeth Rankin (died 1910) of Thurston Smithy, Innerwick.
Died of Wounds on 15 April 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

JAMES SCAMBLER
James Scambler – age 34 – Private (9395) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James was a foreman surfaceman with the North British Railway Company when as a reservist he was mobilised in August 1914 and he joined his battalion in France on 21 August.. James was killed during the battle of Loos.
Born 1880 in Innerwick. Son of Richard and Janet (Litster) Scambler of Branxton, Innerwick. Husband of Elizabeth (Manderson) Scambler of Bilsdean, Oldhamstocks near Cockburnspath who he married in 1911 in Olhamstocks, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1915 and buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension, France.
Also named on the Oldhamstocks Parish and Cockburnspath Parish War Memorials and on the North British Railway Company memorial in Waverley Station, Edinburgh.


WILLIAM SCAMBLER
William Scambler – age 30 – Trimmer and Cook (712TC) H.M. Trawler Thomas Stratten, Royal Naval Reserve.
In 1911 William was a rabbit catcher living with his parents and family at Braxton, Innerwick. He enlisted in March 1916 and served on a number of hired trawlers before he joined the “Thomas Stratten” on 1 October 1917. The “Thomas Stratten” was operating as a armed patrol vessel when she was sunk by a mine from the German submarine U-71 off the Butt of Lewis. 8 of the crew were lost.
Born 1887 in Lennoxtown, Campsie, Stirlingshire. Son of James and Elizabeth Harriot (Dryden) Scambler of Elmscleugh, Innerwick. Husband of Alice (Patterson) Scambler of Braxton, Innerwick and of High Street, Dunbar who he married in 1915 in Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 20 October 1917 and buried in Sandwick Cemetery, Stornoway, Ross And Cromarty

ALEXANDER THOMSON
Alexander Thomson – age 33 – Private (M2/204032) Army Service Corps.
In 1911 Alexander was a groom and gardener, living with his family at Thorntonloch, Innerwick. He died in the Military Hospital at Netley in Hampshire.
Born 1884 at Biel, Stenton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian as Thompson. Son of James and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Thompson. Husband of Isabella Robertson (Dickson) Thomson of Knowes, Prestonkirk who he married in 1906 in Stenton as Thomson.
Died on Service on 3 May 1917 and buried in Stenton Cemetery, East Lothian. (CWG)

1939 – 1945

JOHN LAUDER
John Adam Lauder – age 21 – Sergeant/Air Gunner (1570546) 77 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
John's Halifax bomber had taken of from RAF Full Sutton in Yorkshire for a raid on Sterkrade to bomb a synthetic oil plant but the aircraft crashed into the sea off the Dutch Coast.
Born 1923 in Bunkle & Preston, Berwickshire. Also registered in Duns, Berwickshire. Son of Richard Allan Lauder and of Elizabeth Thorburn (Crowe) Lauder of Ecclaw, Cockburnspath, Berwickshire, of Braxton, Innerwick and of Musselburgh, Midlothian.
Killed in Action on 17 June 1944 and buried in Vlieland General Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Cockburnspath WW2 Memorial in St Helen's Church, Cockburnspath.


GEORGE PORTER
George Porter – age 37 – Sapper (14530083) Royal Engineers
George had been a railway porter. He died of tuberculosis in the Astley Ainslie Institution in Grange Loan, Edinburgh.
Born 1907 in Duns, Berwickshire. Son of George and Christina Mary (Duns) Porter of Crowhill, Innerwick. Husband of Mary Jane (Ruthven) Porter, of Thorntonloch, Innerwick who he married in 1937 in Innerwick.
Died on Service on 22 April 1945 and buried in Innerwick Parish Churchyard. (CWG)


PETER WATSON
Peter Watson – age 25 – Sapper (2118775) 274 Field Company, Royal Engineers.
Peter was employed by the Coltness Coal and Iron Company at their limestone works at Oxwellmains, Dunbar when he enlisted in August 1940. He was serving with the 51st Highland Division in North Africa when he was killed.
Born 1917 in Dunbar, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of James and Mary Jane Bald (Nelson) Watson of the Old Police Station, Innerwick and of Morebattle Mains, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 11 December 1942 and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
