Glasgow Art Club
185 Bath Street, Glasgow.

Thanks to the Club manager for allowing photographs of the memorial to be taken.
The memorial is high on the wall, above a large fireplace, just inside the front door.

There is an inscription, under the Memorial, carved into the wood.
It reads
"A debt not time may cancel is their due".

Morag - there's a Canadian Eugene Bourdon?

I downloaded his Attestation Papers, but I don't know if it's the right one - he doesn't appear on CWGC.

I'll send you the 2 pages.

And we have photos of the School of Art Roll of Honour here: http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-post-67962.html
(70th Brigade, French Army)

There's also a page dedicated to Eugene Bourdon on the Glasgow School of Art blog, but it's a blank page so far, see: http://www.gsaarchives.net/tag/eugene-bourdon/

I might not be clicking the correct tag or whatever on the above!!

Found something else:

http://www.mackintosh-architecture.gla.ac.uk/catalogue/freetext/display/?rs=1&q=eugene%20bourdon

Scroll all the way down until you see References 81 & 82 -

" ...... His remarks may have been aimed at students who subscribed to the Beaux-Arts classicism taught at the School since the appointment of Eugène Bourdon as Professor of Architecture in 1904."

FRENCHMAN’S VALOUR
Professor Eugene Bourdon, director of the Glasgow School.
Sadly I can't get into The British Newspapers Archive to see the article.

There's a write-up on each of the men at page 7 of:
http://glasgowartclub.co.uk/downloads/Art%20club%208pp%20news%20vers%206%20OCTOBER%2009.pdf

Captain Eugene Bourdon, architect, born in 1870, studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was a pupil of M. Girault said to be “the greatest living master of his profession”, an exponent of the Classical Style. In 1904, about to set up as an architect in Paris, Bourdon received an invitation from Glasgow to take up a post as visiting professor in the department of architecture. He accepted this teaching post and in the following year was given a permanent post as director of architectural studies and professor of architectural design. Bourdon was a brilliant teacher held in high regard by his students. He was elected artist member of GAC in January, 1907.
From 1890 Bourdon had served in the French Army Reserve, a statutory duty in France. He continued to train with the Reserve for a few weeks each year rising in rank from private soldier to captain. When Germany declared war on France, although over the age of forty, Bourdon immediately put himself at the service of his country. He served with the French 78th Brigade on the Western Front. In 1915, twice mentioned in despatches, he received the British Military Cross and the French Legion d’honeur. He fought at Verdun then joined the British forces on the Somme. On 1st July, the first day of the great offensive, Bourdon went over the top and was killed that evening, two weeks before his forty-sixth birthday. Some buildings of importance in Glasgow in the classical style, such as the Bank of Scotland in Sauchiehall Street, Scottish Legal Assurance building in Bothwell Street, and the Union Bank in St. Vincent Street, were designed by former students of Bourdon, a fitting memorial to his name. Glasgow School of Art has a collection of the drawings of Eugene Bourdon. These can be seen at the Bourdon Building by appointment.

James Brown Montgomerie-Fleming, gentleman, lived at Kelvinside House, the home of his father James B Fleming, solicitor. He was admitted to lay membership of GAC in April, 1909. He was an author who wrote “Desultary Notes on John Jamieson’s Etymological Dictionary of the Scot’s Language” and notes on other learned works. At the outset of war he joined the East Yorkshire Regiment attaining the rank of major. He served on the Western front. In August 1917 he died of his wounds in the casualty clearing station of Dozinghem in Belgium and was buried in the cemetery there.

Gilbert Anderson Ramsay, joined GSA aged 16 in 1896. He was living in Greenock and his occupation was listed as 'joiner'. He continued his studies until 1902, then living at Glenlee, Kilmacolm and now listed as 'architect'. He was head of Whitechapel Gallery in London until, in 1914, he was appointed superintendant (nowadays director) of Glasgow Museums and Art Galleries. He became a lay member of GAC in October 1914. Not long after taking up the post in Glasgow he volunteered for war service, joining the 17th Battalion of the HLI, the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Division. He was not to return to make his mark at Kelvingrove. In July 1915 he was killed in action in Turkey at the battle of Gallipoli in the Dardanelles campaign.

Captain James Russell, a coal exporter, lived at “Dalfruin”, Great Western Road. He was admitted to lay membership of GAC in October 1913. He joined the 17th Battalion of the HLI Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Division, ‘B’ Company. This company was composed of former pupils of city schools, High School, Glasgow Academy, etc. He died of wounds received in action in June, 1917.

Second Lieutenant Allan Newton Sutherland, artist, hailed from Invergordon, Ross-shire. He was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and at Hospitalfield, Arbroath. When elected to Glasgow Art Club as an artist member in December 1913 he was living in St Vincent Street, Glasgow. He was developing as a society portrait painter but did not live to fulfil his potential as an artist. He joined the Gordon Highlanders 17th Battalion and in March 1918 was killed in action at the battle of Arras, aged thirty-three. His name is on the war memorial in Arras.

Ken
You always amaze me with the amount of fantastic information that you find, often on my behalf! I need to learn more about researching.

Thank you so much for these great biographies of these men and it's made my journey, and difficulties in getting the pictures, so worthwhile.

Kind regards
Morag.

If he was awarded an MC he maybe was employed as a liaison officer with British forces? After ten years in Glasgow, and being an older man, he would have been well placed in a staff role between the two armies.

Eugène BOURDON
Né(e) le/en 16-07-1870 (75 - Paris (ex Seine), France)

He was a Staff Major of the 78eme Brigade in 39eme Division

Killed in action 1.7.1916 Bois d'en Haut, Hardecourt, Somme

The infantry assault by the French 39th Division and the British 30th Division was launched at the same time 07:30. Where the British and French lines met at the Chem des Anglais, Lt Col Fairfax CO of the 17th Kings Liverpool's and Commandant Le Petit CO of 3e Battalion 153e Reg, left the trench together with the second wave in a sign of unity. The individual Battalions advanced to there objectives, both assisting each other in the capture of the Dublin Redoubt. The rest of the French 39th Division, commanded by General Nourrisson, attacked under the cover of a river mist, towards Bois Faviere and Hardecourt. They quickly over ran the German 6th Bavarian Reg, in Adolf and Faviere trenches, they then advanced into what remained of Bois Faviere, where they were engaged in fierce hand to hand fighting, the Germans who held onto the bottom north eastern corner of the wood. By midday the situation was so satisfactory that Gen. Nourrisson proposed to attack Hardecourt, but he abandoned the idea after four German counter attacks were launched from Hardecourt, all of which were repulsed suffering very heavy casualties, with some German units being totally wiped out. So ended the first day with the French having taken all their objectives except a small area of Faviere Wood. The French now consolidated their gains as it was expected the enemy would attack in force at the this point were the French and British lines joined expecting it to be a weak point
