The Sunday Post, 22nd. May, 1927, page 2:-
"KILMARNOCK WAR MEMORIAL
8000 See Unveiling by Sir H. Trenchard (Kilmarnock, Saturday.)
In presence of an assembly of over 8000 people Air-Marshal Sir Hugh M. Trenchard unveiled the Kilmarnock War Memorial this afternoon.
The memorial, which occupies a fine site in Elmbank Avenue, opposite the Dick Institute, library, and museum, is of a unique character, there being nothing of the same kind in the country.
It takes the form of a temple or shrine and is a large and architecturally imposing building of classical design, with a massive bronze statue inside.
Around the inner walls are bronze panels embossed with the names of 850 Kilmarnock men who fell in the war.

Sculptor`s Gift
The memorial was designed by Mr. James Miller, F.R.I.B.A., Glasgow, and the statue is the work of Mr. David M`Gill, the London sculptor, who is a native of Kilmarnock, and who gifted it to the town.
The cost of the building was well over £5000.
At the unveiling ceremony today the enclosure immediately in front of the memorial was reserved for relatives of the fallen, of whom nearly one thousand were present.
On either side of this were large contingents of ex-servicemen and Territorials.
After Sir Hugh Trenchard had unloosed the huge Union Jack which covered the gateway of the memorial the buglers of the R.S.F. sounded "The Last Post".
The pipers played "The Flowers of the Forest" and the buglers sounded "The Reveille."

Handed Over To Council
Sir Hugh delivered an impressive address, and afterwards the Kilmarnock Burgh Military Band and the Kilmarnock Musical Club Choir gave a rendering of "The Hallelujah Chorus."
On behalf of the War Memorial Committee, Sir Alexander Walker, K.B.E., handed over the memorial to the keeping of the Town Council, and in the absence of Provost Wilson, through illness, Bailie David Orr, Senior Magistrate, accepted custody.
At the close of the service hundreds of wreaths were placed inside the memorial, and for hours afterwards there was a large queue of people intent on inspecting the interior of the temple of memory."
