The Glasgow Herald, Monday, 30th. April, 1917.
"Deaths on Service.
M'Lelland. -
Died of wounds on 10th. April, Private Archd. M'Lelland, Yeomanry, attached Gordon Highlanders, son of Hugh M'Lelland, 'Maryfield', Kilmarnock."


Service records exist for this soldier.
Edinburgh, 19th March, 1915, Attested, 2/2 Lovat Scouts. Archibald McLelland (19), Apprentice C.A., Maryfield, Dundonald Road, Kilmarnock, single, served in Cadet Corps. Pte. 5521.
Embarked for France 11th December, 1916.
12th December, 1916, transferred 7th Cameron Highlanders.
19th March, 1917, transferred 1/6 Gordon Highlanders.
Much correspondence regarding cross headstone which had to be altered from "Killed in Action" to "Died of Wounds".


1901 Census Ayrshire, Kilmarnock, 36 Dundonald Road, recorded (transcription):- Archibald McLelland (3), grandson, born Kilmarnock; Archibald McLelland (69), Cheese and Grain Merchant, born Kilmarnock; Hugh McLelland (46), Cheese and Grain Merchant, born Kilmarnock; Elizabeth McLelland (29), Housekeeper, born Butes., Rothesay; two female siblings.
