The Scotsman, Monday, 8th May 1922, Page 9.

On Saturday afternoon a handsome memorial, erected in Denny Cemetery by the inhabitants of the burgh of Denny and Dunipace at a cost of £1200, as a tribute to the 154 men who fell, was unveiled by the Duke of Montrose, K.T.

The weather was wet during the forepart of the day, but fortunately there was a cessation of the rain during the ceremony.

Provost Locchead presided. The dedication address was given by the Rev. R. J. Bain of Broompark U.F. Church.

The monument was designed by Mr. G. Paulin, A.R.S.A., Glasgow, and has been erected on an eminance at the east end of the cemetery, and the ground was a gift from Mr. Charles W. Forbes, Callendar.

The following is quoted from The Denny & Dunipace Roll of Honour and refers to the War Memorial in the Cemetery.

"The Monument is the work of G. H. Paulin, A.R.S.A., Glasgow. The pedestal is of grey granite and the bronze figure of Victory or Peace has been adopted from the Burgh Seal. The site of the Monument, a knoll to the east of Denny Cemetery, is the gift of Charles William Forbes Esq., of Callendar".

Sculpture was by George Henry Paulin who seemed to have a preference for kneeling figures, executing other similar statues for Milngavie and Dollar Academy.

Denny & Dunipace appear to have two war memorials - one located in the cemetery and one in the town centre, both of which have identical plaques.

A thread was previously started, here;

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=96

which contained details of BOTH memorials. I have therefore split the threads accordingly, but the original has been retained in its entirety for continuity of posts.

I have few questions regarding the memorial in Denny and Dunipace Cemetery:

1. Why does Denny have a memorial in the town AND in the local cemetery? Were thet erected at the same time?
2. As the memorial in the cemetery is looking a bit run down, does anyone know of any plans to refubish it?

If anyone knows the answers to these questions I would be very grateful.

Hi rw,

Sorry, I don't know the answer to either of your questions!

I have a copy of an article in the Scotsman on the unveiling on the cemetery memorial, but nothing is mentioned about the one in the town (I have added the transcription to one of the above posts.)

It might possibly have been the case that 'duplicate panels' were ordered and added to the wall in the town at a later date - but that's presumption on my part.

Maybe when the town eventually gets it's 'regeneration', these panels might get cleaned up but I hope if that happens, the same doesn't happen to them as has happened to the Bonnybridge Memorials' plaques which (in my humble opinion) look worse now than they did before cleaning.

Anne

Hi Anne,

Thanks for your reply. I wondered whether or not the town memorial was perhaps a later addition, maybe from when the WWII names were added in 1950?

It is Harry Paulin's sculpture of Peace (or Victory) in Denny Cemetery which really interests me as his work comprises some of the most moving memorials such as Kirkcudbright, Milngavie, Dollar Academy, and the memorial to the 51st Highland Division at Beaumont Hamel. It is a shame such a beautiful memorial is not appreciated by more of the local people because of its position. It is also sad that the local council, Falkirk, don't recognise it as their responsibility when it is badly in need of re-bronzing.

On the re-bronzing front, Brian Caster from Powderhall Bronze is outstanding and the Dollar Academy memorial was re-bronzed by him six months ago. It looks amazing.
