Lochlee Church, which is a couple of miles up the glen from the War Memorial in Tarfside village, has no memorials but on leafing through the vestry book, where brief details of services and collections from 1934 to present times are recorded, I came across this entry for September 3, 1939, which simply reads 'War declared. No service.'

Not listed on this Loch Lee at Tarfside war memorial is 14th (County of London ) Bn London Scottish

Pte 2040 James Ian INNES , born Perth, enlisted London residence Crouch End killed in action 3 January 1915 France & Flanders theatre of war

- He is listed on the family headstone at the ruined Loch Lee churchyard in Glen Esk as his parents farmed in Glen Esk at ARSALLARY FARM . As he was not born in the glen he is not listed on the WW1 memorial at Tarfside . He worked for the Chartered Bank of India and served in WW1 and killed in action at Givenchy , France

Cruickshank, James Orr. Pte. no.200176, 4th Bn. Gordon Highlanders. Buried La Clytte Military Cemetery, Belgium. Killed in action 15/4/15 aged 19. Youngest son of Samuel, Schoolhouse, Tarfside, Tayside. Grandson of the late George Cruickshank, East Bank U.F Hawick. Commemorated on the Lochlee Parish war memorial, Tarfside. Born and lived Brechin enlisted in Aberdeen.
Also commemorated on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

His death is mentioned in the "Hawick Express" of Apr 30, 1915
