One more correction - to my comment about this being used 9 times - make that 10. I've just realised that there is another memorial in Grangetown in South Wales which is yet another version of this figure. As has been pointed out elsewhere (see the comments - & excellent photos - on the Langholm memorial) there are slight variations with some of the versions, but the same basic cast was used in all cases.

I've just been told that 2 years ago the local British legion had 3 WW2 plates added to the bottom of the memorial.
One of these plates shows the following:-
"In glorious memory of those that gave their lives in the world war 1939 - 45"
The other 2 plates give the names of those fallen. They do not give details of Rank or Units unlike those of the first War.

The town hall is again open for business and the original WW2 memorial can now be accessed.

Photos to follow when I'm next over that way on the motorbike. Wink

I understand that these WW2 plaques were added to the memorial sometime before remembrance day 2011. The names are exactly the same as those on the plaque inside the Town Hall.

JOHN MALTMAN – age 32 – Private (18285) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John joined his battalion at Gallipoli on 18 July 1915. They were evacuated from Gallipoli in January 1916 and moved to Alexandra in Egypt and from there sailed to Marseilles for service in France.
Born 1884 in Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Agnes (Monaghan) Maltman. Husband of Maggie (Anderson) Maltman of Greenburn, Applegarth and of Mount Pleasant, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1906 at Longwood, Tongland, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died of Wounds on 16 July 1916 and buried in Corbie Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Applegarth War Memorial and on the family grave in Borgue Churchyard.
