An unveiling report is in the 2nd of November 1925 Scotsman.

As well as the land on the High Street being gifted by former provost Winter the unveiling was done by the Earl of Strathmore, with Provost Nicol presiding on the 31st of October 1925.

The designer is given as Thomas Beattie of Edinburgh and the design is of a Black Watch soldier leaving the war for home placing a wreath in tribute to his fallen colleagues.

The stone used is from the original quarry at Craigleith of which most of Edinburgh Old Town was built.

The memorial is said to have 142 names.
