"ARDROSSAN
PRIVATE GEORGE BRECKENRIDGE, R.S.F.
(Killed)
Word has been received in Ardrossan that Pte. George Breckenridge, R.S.F., youngest son of Mr Breckenridge, 36 Glasgow Street, was killed in action on the night on 12th August. The sad news was conveyed in a letter from Corporal W Crawford of the same battalion to his wife. Corporal Crawford says;"He died a hero, and never suffered any pain as he was killed outright by a bullet". In a further letter he says "We miss his cheery ways, as he was always happy". His death occurred in the course of a charge in which the battalion "did extra well". Pte. Breckenridge, who was 37 years of age, was a native of Ardrossan, and previously was employed at the harbour. He was among the first in Ardrossan to enlist at the beginning of the war, and in his sixteen months experience at the front he has come through many engagements. He was a keen footballer, and played for some time in the Ardrossan Celtic team. Sympathy is felt for his aged mother in her bereavement"
