Auchtermuchty

The Auchtermuchty war memorial takes the form of a tall freestone shrine featuring the carved half-scale sculpture of a soldier with head bowed and arms reversed set in an arched niche at the front. The commemoration and names of the dead are carved into the remaining three sides of the monument and there are carved regimental badges around the top. The memorial was designed by Glasgow architect James B. Dunn in collaboration with Edinburgh sculptor Alexander Carrick. There is further information on the sculptor at the Carrick website at:

The monument stands at 'The Cross' in the middle of the town.

Born St. Giles, Edinburgh. Enlisted Perth, 11 September 1914, aged 35. Posted, 12 September 1914. Disembarked France, 14 July 1915. Killed in action, Loos, 25 September 1915, aged 33. Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, Pas de Calais, France, IV. G. 5. Son of Mr and Mrs Hector White, York Place, Perth; husband of Margaret Houston White, Orchard Flat, Auchtermuchty, Fifeshire.

AUCHTERMUCHTY CASUALTIES.

Mrs White, Orchardflat, Auchtermuchty, has received information that her husband, Sergeant Wm. H. White, 9th Black Watch, is missing, The Dundee Advertiser, 12 October 1915, 8.

SERGEANT KILLED.

Official information has been received of the death in action of another Perth man. He is Sergeant William H. White, 9th Black Watch, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Hector White, Brighton Villa, York Place, Perth. Sergeant White, who was 33 years of age, was brought up in Perth Barracks, where his father acted as colour-sergeant of the 42nd. Deceased who was well known in Perth, was married, and his wife and three of a family reside at Auchtermuchty. He enlisted in Kitchener’s Army at the outbreak of hostilities. The Dundee Advertiser, Friday, 5 November 1915, 9.

Sergeant W. White, 9th Black Watch, Auchtermuchty, killed in November 1915. He carried on a plumber’s business in Auchtermuchty for a number of years. Sergeant White left a widow and three children. Fife News Almanac, 1916.

Welcome to the forum and what a fantastic photograph. That must have taken some doing. Although the technique would not have been beyond any god photographer the fact it was done by a community and the men are all dead must make it pretty unique.

It is quite unique and I can't remember seeing anything else like it. I'm not sure where the image was first used - this was a copy of an original that was sent to me by a friend several years ago.

Scottish Rifles from Auchtermuchty. Unfortunately no sign of Victory Medal

The Scotsman has reported that the rifle from the Carrick sculpture has ben stolen. They are reporting it as vandalism but it will be metal theft if it was a bronze rifle.

VANDALS have damaged a Scottish war memorial which honours fallen soldiers from two world wars.

The statue has been defaced after a stone rifle was ripped from the figure of a hero soldier in Auchtermuchty, Fife.

Police are now hunting the vandals following the incident.

Pc Pamela Hay, of Fife Constabulary, said: “This was a despicable act.”

Killed In Normandy
Mr and Mrs James Kennedy, Lochybank Place, Auchtermuchty, have been notified that their youngest son, Driver John Kennedy, has been killed in action in Normandy. He was 22, and before joining up was employed by W. Robertson, contractor.
An elder son is serving overseas with the Black Watch.
