(Glasgow Herald 3rd May 1915)
"For the past few days rumours have been current regarding casualties among the Bridge of Allan detachment of Territorials, and these unfortunately have proved to have had some foundation. The detachment form part of the 7th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. Information comes from a Bridge of Allan man, Corporal John R. Ramsay, of A Company, who writes:-"We have at last been in action, and I am sorry to say that three of the 'Bridge' boys have been killed and five wounded. Those killed, so far as I am aware, are James Bell, James McGeachin and Malcolm McKinnon" Private Bell and McGeachin were employed previous to the war in the Keirfield Works, Bridge of Allan, while Private McKinnon had not completed his apprenticeship with Messrs Robertson and Ramsay, joiners. The two first named were among the youngest men in the Battalion."

Quote:
(Glasgow Herald 25th March 1915)
"In a letter to a friend in Bridge of Allan, Lance-Corporal John Carmichael, of the 1st Black Watch, tells how another Bridge of Allan man, Private Charles Williams, of the same regiment, met his death. The writer, who has only recently returned to the front after having been invalided home, says :-"Previous to coming here we had the 2nd Battalion lying about a mile from our billets. I met two of the "Bridge" chaps - Johnnie Salmond and Jimmy Rae - and they were both looking very fit. I have met Wilson and McLaren of our own Battalion, also Andrew McLeish. I received information yesterday as to how Charlie Williams met his death. He was on his way to regimental headquarters with a few others to get a piece of wood to make a cross for a chum of his who had fallen when a shell burst in the midst of them, killing him and wounding the others."

Derek.

Derek, I cannot thank you enough for posting this information regarding my Great Uncle Charles Williams. It has taken me this long to find my way back to this site, and I'm so glad I have arrived! Although I was a bit shocked and sad to read the info, I'm grateful to have it, and will pass it on to my Mum. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

You're very welcome Kelly.
These details from mostly long lost letters only survive in newspapers now.
