I'm working my way down the list. I want to get the list completed for the Centenary.
I'm collecting BDM information from ScotlandsPeople to try to put a personal story behind each man. So as I do the research on each name, I'll post the story I find. At least that way these men are not just a list of names.
If you want a copy of his Birth and Census records send me a PM with your email address.

I was born in that neck of the woods too, so I have a personal interest in the Larkhall Memorial.

The earliest record I can find for James Cowan is the 1891 Census for LARKHALL.
Military records show that he was born in Larkhall.

His parents were James Cowan, a coal miner, and Elizabeth Ogilvie.

The 1891 Census for LARKHALL was taken on 5 Apr 1891.
The family were living at Frames' Building, Raploch Street, Larkhall, as follows:
James Cowan, Head, age 39, Coal Miner, b Lanark.
Elizabeth Cowan, Wife, age 40, b New Lanark.
Sarah Cowan, Daughter, age 10, Scholar, b Auchenheath.
JAMES COWAN, Son, age 7, Scholar, b Larkhall.
His age is shown here as 7 years, so he was born around 1884.

The 1901 Census for LARKHALL was taken on 31 Mar 1901.
The family were living at 4 Caufields Square, Raploch Street, Larkhall, as follows:
James Cowan, Head, age 50, Coal Miner, b Lanark.
Elizabeth Cowan, Wife, age 50, b New Lanark.
JAMES COWAN, Son, age 17, Coal Miner, b Larkhall.
(Notice that James Cowan and his parents were next-door neighbours to Alexander Berry (shown earlier) and his family at No 5 Caufields Square.)
I cannot find the 1911 Census record for James and his parents.

(On 5 Jul 1925, his mother Elizabeth Ogilvie or Cowan age 75, died at 46 Raploch Street, Larkhall.
On her death record she is shown as the widow of James Cowan, and her death was reported by her
brother-in-law Peter Cowan, 57 Machan Road, Larkhall. I cannot find a death record for his father.)

James Cowan joined the 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) as Private 7736.

He went to France & Flanders on 9 Feb 1915.
He was wounded and died of his wounds 39 days later on 20 Mar 1915, age about 30 years old.

He is buried at ESTAIRES COMMUNAL CEMETERY AND EXTENSION, grave reference II. T. 2.
The cemetery is about 11 kilometres west of Armentieres, France.

There are 821 men buried at ESTAIRES COMMUNAL CEMETERY AND EXTENSION.

Looking for information regarding Abraham/Abram Torrance 1351 of the Cameronians Kia17/5/1915?
Was he related to Mrs Abraham Torrance of Quarter whose son James was a Royal Scots Casualty?
Also possibly related to Abraham/Abram Seaforth Highlanders son of Mrs Helen Torrance of Stonehouse.

Abraham Torrance, Pte. 1351, 6th Bn. Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), entered France on 20 March, 1915.
He was born in Dalserf Parish and enlisted at Larkhall.
He was Killed in Action on 17 May, 1915.
The CWGC show that he is buried in a Special Memorial at Rue-du-Bois Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix.
The SNWM have his name spelled as 'Torrence'.
He is one of the soldiers I have on my list, but I have not completed my deeper investigation of this man.
You will need to follow up the information by checking Birth, Marriage and Census records.

Hello Anne,
I've had difficulty identifying this man. There are 4 'A Hendry' on CWGC and none show any connection to Larkhall.
Did you download the Will from ScotlandsPeople?
I'll venture to say 'no' as they are expensive, so can you give me your reasons for connecting this man.
Kindest Regards,
Tom Lang.
