Extract from Glasgow University RoH.

James Cunningham was born on the 19th August 1888, in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was the third son of Matthew Neil Cunningham (1855-1929), an Insurance Manager, and Mary Ann, nee Young, living in St. Leonard Street, Lanark. James came to Glasgow University in September 1906 for two years, attending Latin, Mathematics, Political Economy and History classes. He then left the University, however he returned for a third year in 1913, studying Constitutional Law and History. James did not graduate from Glasgow University.

According to United States of America World War 1 records, James was living in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan when drafted. His occupation was listed as an Accountant and Agent in Detroit. On June 5 1917 he was required to register for the draft, and was sent to Camp Wheeler, in Macon, Georgia, home of the 31st Dixie Division. Camp Wheeler was established on the 18th July 1917 as a temporary training camp for National Guard units in federal service. The 31st Dixie Division arrived in France in September 1918, and was designated as a replacement division, which meant that most of the units were split up and sent to other divisions.

However, 1st Sergeant James Cunningham, now of the 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, did not make it to France. According to the Strathearn Herald, dated 7th December 1918, James died of pneumonia on the 16th September 1918, aged 30, on board a transport ship bound for France. 1st Sergeant James Cunningham is buried in the Saint Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. He is also commemorated on the Lanark War Memorial (see the Scottish War Memorials Project and the Crieff War Memorial (also see the Scottish War Memorials Project), where his father was living at the time of his death.

He is also commemorated on the Glasgow RoH.

John
