Hi Guys,

I am new to this site, I am considering compiling a book of those who served, were injured or fell during the Great War. I have done a good bit of research so far but I am stuck for a William Vincent who appears on the Newmains War Memorial. If anyone can shed some light on Mr Vincent I would be obliged. There is no mention of him in the Wishaw Press from 1914 - 1919.

Regards,

Ally

Hello Ally

I see Wm Vincent is listed in the Newmains section. If the local paper doesn't list him and there are no candidates in CWGC and SDGW you are going to struggle I think.

SNWM lists only one William Vincent and he's an officer so he's not your man. If he died after being discharged it may be worth looking at local deaths post-1919.

You should probably go back to the local paper and look for deaths after the war.

Cheers

Adam

Hi Ally and welcome.

I see you have been asking around on other forums as well. None of my usual sources come up with anything. No will, service record or entry on the Rolls of Honour that I hold nor any entry in De Ruvigny.

I note that we do not have many church, school or club memorials or Rolls of Honour from your area on this forum so this is something worth checking. For example if you were looking for someone from Stranraer, I would recommend the Roll of Honour in the museum archive which has regiments and year of enlistment and there may well be something local to you.

Don't restrict yourself to looking at obits in the papers - my local papers had some enlistments, letters from the front and many reports of injuries and awards of honours so any of these could help you. Also a few men on some of my local memorials actually died in the 1920s or in organisations (such as VAD) that wouldn't necessarily be listed on CWGC or SNWM. If you can trace the program for the memorial dedication service, that may have some info.

Finally, have you checked the local library and archives to see if the minutes of the war memorial committee have been preserved somewhere?

Good luck and let us know if you find anything.

\Paul

Hi Ally,

The names on the memorial at Newmains will be listed in the Roll of Honour for Wishaw and Cambusnethan, which we recently transcribed and made available online. Have you had a look at this?

You will find a link to it at www.scottishmilitaryresearch.co.uk

I know there is a section for Newmains and the names are now listed alphabetically in our version so he should be easy to locate.

Regards,
David

Guys,

I managed to find him......

William Vincent – Private 13288 - South African Infantry 2nd & 6th Regiment

William, was the youngest son of Thomas & Annie (Fisher) Vincent, residing at 14 Stonecraigs Row, Double Houses, Cambusnethan. The 1881 Census shows William having been born a year earlier in Lugar, Ayrshire. He had the following siblings (ages from the 1881 Census), Maggie 14, Helen 12, Thomas 11, Annie 9, Janet 7, John and twin James 5 and brother Malcolm aged 3.

The family had moved to 2 McIntyre's Few, Cambusnethan by the time of the 1891 Census and some of his siblings had left home.
William resided at McIntyre’s Land, Newmains and was employed as a blast furnace filler at the Coltness Iron Works when he married Wilhelmina Brown, a domestic servant who was employed at “Glenview” Kirk Road, Wishaw. They were married at the Coltness Iron Works School on the 9th March 1905, after Banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The couple had their first child, Thomas, in 1907 in Larkhall and later had a girl, Roseanna (named after Wilhelmina’s mother), in 1909 when they were again living in Wishaw. They emigrated to South Africa sometime after the 1911 Census.

William joined the 2nd South African Infantry on the 16th April 1916, giving his wife, Mrs. W. Vincent, as his next of kin and an address of Pine Cottage, Overtown, Lanarkshire, (which is a bit strange?) His occupation at that time was a miner, so perhaps he had gone to South Africa to work in the diamond mines? He saw service in East Africa with the 6th South African Infantry from the 8th June 1916 till the 15th February 1917, was then transferred to the Western Front and to the 2nd South African Infantry, from the 18th March 1917, till his death on the 24th March 1918. Private Vincent was reported missing in action, in the Battle of Marrieres Wood and was presumed killed in action on 24th March 1918. His physical description was 5’9” tall, blue eyes and brown hair.

I have found a record of the second marriage of William’s son, Thomas, at Durban, South Africa on the 15th August 1946 to a Janet Little Brown, a 38 year old spinster from Possilpark, Glasgow, Scotland. Thomas was a 39 year old tramway inspector who had previously been widowed. I have been unable to find any details of William’s wife Wilhelmina or daughter Roseanna.

Private Vincent has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France Panels 95 – 98, and Newmains War Memorial.
