Memorial: TOWER HILL MEMORIAL

The Pomeranian was torpedoed by UB-77 in Lyme Bay with a loss of 55 lives. A subsequent Admiralty enquiry found that a lack of life-rafts was a contributory factor in the large loss of lives

The record of soldiers died in the Great War shows William was born in Bridgeton, Glasgow, lived in Stevenston and enlisted in Saltcoats.

William's service record shows that he was a Cordite Worker. He married Mary McGregor on 3 November 1916 in Glasgow and had one daughter Annie. His parents were John and Agnes Murdoch, of 3 Schoolwell St, Stevenston and his siblings were David, aged 13; Richard, aged 10; Gilbert, aged 6; Lizzie, aged 26; Annie, aged 19; Smithia, aged 16 and Agnes, aged 1. His wife and daughter were living at 10 Schoolwell St. William's record also shows that he was reported missing in action on 31 March 1918 then on 26 April 1918 was a Prisoner of War in Germany. He died from Spanish Influenza on 10 November 1918 at a camp in Friedrichsfield

John's service record shows he was living at 74 Boglemart Street, Stevenston and was a cordite worker. He was 19 years 9 months when he enlisted on 1 March 1917. His next of kin was his mother Grace. He had a sister also Grace aged 23 and his Grandparents were John and Grace McLaren, also living at 74 Boglemart Street. His other blood relations were an Uncle Andrew Nicol, and Aunts Mrs Mary Daly and Mrs Peace.

David's service record shows his father was deceased and his mother Agnes as next of kin. His brothers were John Anderson Norwood, aged 19 and Thomas A Norwood, aged 17 and his sisters were Agnes, aged 23 and Hannah, aged 21. His Aunts and Uncles by blood were James Anderson, aged 60, of 370 Cathcart Rd, Glasgow and John Anderson, 47, of 39 Albert Road, Crosshill, Glasgow

There is a letter from his mother to the records officer on 25 April 1920
"Sirs
I have two sons killed in the war
My eldest son missing at Loos Cpl 9th Black Watch 1915
My second son Pte D Norwood 45969 12th Royal Scots killed near Ypres Sept 20th 1917"
