Robert Hill RGA recorded near the base of the memorial was a Gateshead Borough policeman. His details are as follows;
Robert Hill born 6th November 1886 at Choicelee Farm, Langton to William & Agnes (nee Hamilton) Hill. They lived at Woodheads, Greenlaw when Robert applied to join the police service.
He was a single man , occupation farm servant employed by James McDougal, Bassendean, Gordon when he was appointed as a constable with Gateshead Borough Police on the 1st October 1909.
On the 16th June 1911 he married Elizabeth Martin (farm servant) of The Bridge, Chirnside, Berwick at Edrom. Marriage was number 5 of 1911 in the Parish of Edrom.
On 13th June 1917 he resigned from the police and enlisted as Gunner 167343 RGA serving with the 169th Siege Battery. He was KIA 15.4.1918 and is buried in Boves West Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. Grave reference C 35.
His brother David Hill was an Edinburgh City policeman and he enlisted as Private S/18675 Cameron Highlanders and was KIA 13th August 1916 while serving as a Lance Corporal with the 6th Battalion. He had been at Robert's wedding in 1911, possibly best man.

I have come across a Scot in the South African army who returned to South Africa and died in August 1919. He is listed on a war memorial but is not on CWGC / SNWM.

Could these two have survived the war in 4th South African Infantry Regiment and returned to South Africa but succumbed to something like Spanish Flu?

EDROM

Lady Houston-Boswall, Blackadder, unveiled on Sunday afternoon a war memorial in the form of a Celtic Cross which has been erected to the memory of 46 officers and men from the parish of Edrom who fell in the war. Major Logan Home, Edrom, gave a short address, and the monument was dedicated by the Rev. John McKechnie, parish minister.

During the Duns church service on Remembrance Sunday the names of 213 WWI fatalities named on memorials and headstones in Duns & District were read out between each item of the service, grouped in streets & rural areas. About half were accompanied by the man's photo taken from contemporary local newspapers - one lady lost at sea was also commemorated in this way - which proved quite moving.

I was privileged to be invited to spend about 90 min with both P7 classes at Duns Primary today, showing them the men's photos and talking about how the war started, the experience of WWI locally and the local war memorials. It was heartening how interested they were and all the questions they had.

For about 10% of the men I briefly expanded on their experience - whether typical or extraordinary - including this headstone from Edrom churchyard:

Erected by his fellow servicemen in memory of
ADAM SUTHERLAND
who died from war wounds
15th October 1934
aged 58 years

It was erected December 1935.

Sutherland worked at Chirnside station then the nearby paper mill, and was the "first Derby scheme man to be wounded in the district" in August 1916.

Serving with the KOSB in the Somme offensive, he had a foot amputated.

After the war he was a pivotal figure in establishing the local British Legion.

His gravestone is a rudimentary nod to a CWGC design.

They appear to have been 3 relations and presumably brothers. In the "Roll of Honour" printed in the Berwickshire News in May and again in July 1919, they feature as: Sergeant Neil (DLI), Private AW (South African Contingent) and Private T (South African Contingent) O'Donnell; all from Kimmerghame Mains Farm by Edrom. They appear to have had connections to Winchburgh.

Also death notice as killed in action in France appears in local paper for this man "son of late Patrick & Ellen"...

https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/1560071/o'donnell,-john/

... perhaps unrelated.
