Still plugging away at the Plean War Memorial. There are three soldiers of this name on CWGC and SNWM. Two have middle names, one hasn't... but then, not all middle names are recorded on the village memorial.
The one with no middle name, however, was in the Australian forces and what's more, came from the same town as the Phee brothers also cited on the Plean memorial. His number was 7005. Looking up his file, I can see no mention of Plean (he was born in Glasgow). His parents were John and Elizabeth Weir Inglis.
Interestingly, I have found a baptism in Plean in 1905 for a Robert Inglis, whose father was John, a miner, and whose mother was Elizabeth Weir.
Do you think it's the right family? How do I join up the dots?
Any ideas please?

Hi,
I searched the Scotsman online digital archive and could find no articles for an Inglis with a connection to Plean. I did find 7 other entries for Plean, so let me know if you are looking for any others.

Hi Alex, I'm researching all the men who are named on the Plean war memorial, so I'd be very interested in information on those 7 you found (WW1 or WW2). I'm afraid I don't have access to the Scotsman online...
Thank you for your interest.

I think you can rule out the Scots Guardsman Peter Inglis, he was from Freuchie (born Ladybank) and was one of 7 sons to serve.
Have you access to SDGW to see what is says about the Gordon Highlander?
So you're left with the Aussie and Gordon....Good Luck!

"Soldiers Died in the Great War", it's a database that is available via some pay sites or as a cd-rom.
It often contains enlistment/town of birth info.
I don't have access unfotunately, but others on the forum may.
Derek.

Is that one of the collections on Ancestry? I looked it up and there's a Gordon. It says enlisted in Keith, but that's about it.... that said, I've just noticed it says index only, so maybe there's more in the database which I don't seem to be able to access from Ancestry...
Thanks for your input anyhow.

again, probably not the man you are looking for but as it is so close to the centenary of his death, I thought I would hijack the thread and add the following:
Extract from The Fife News: Killed in Action – “Mr David Inglis, Freuchie, has
received intimation that his son, Private Peter D. Inglis, 1st Battalion Scots Guards,
who was posted as missing, was killed on 4th January in action in France. He was
the first local man to join a first-line regiment after the war began, and he put in only
six weeks’ training before leaving for the front.”
9316 Private Peter Dryburgh Inglis,C Company, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards, killed on
3 January 1915 near the La Bassee canal, northern France. The son of David and
Barbara M Inglis of East End, Freuchie, he had been an apprentice at Messrs W
Lumsden and Son, Freuchie and later worked for the Fife Coal Company. He has no
known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France, panel 3 and
4.

You're right, probably not the one I'm after, though he was a miner, but we want to remember them all, so why not! |

There was a Peter Inglis aged 16 living in St Ninian's - only 4 miles from Plean in 1911 so this is probably your best bet. Not sure how you would tie that to a service record but, if correct, it will at least give age and family members. The 1911 census on Scotland's people would be the next step but I'm out of credits at the moment. Good luck.

Well, in fact the right one is, as I suspected, the AIF soldier. His birth certificate shows the same parents as the Robert baptised in Plean in 1905 and corresponds to the names of the parents in the Australian service file.
That's one puzzle solved.
Thanks to everyone for your help,
