"ARDROSSAN

Mrs Murphy, 33 Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, has received official notice that her son, Pte. John Murphy, 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers, has died from wounds received on 16th June.
Pte. Murphy was previously reported as wounded and missing. He was a reservist and was called up in August, 1914. He was wounded at Ypres. Prior to mobilisation he was employed at Messrs Nobel's Factory, Ardeer"

The record of soldiers died in the Great War shows John was born in Stevenston, lived in Ardrossan and enlisted in Irvine.

John is also on the Saltcoats Memorial

The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald has an article on John's brother Alexander who also died which mentions the death of a third brother Laurence, who fell at Ypres. Neither Alexander or Laurence are commemorated on either Saltcoats, Stevenston or Ardrossan or Irvine memorials. Details of Alexander and Laurence posted here to recognise the familys sacrifice.

Named on a family gravestone in Kirkinner Churchyard, Wigtownshire.

ALFRED JONES. – age 34 – Private (3814) 3rd Battalion, Australian Infantry.
Alfred was brought up in Garlieston before he emigrated to Australia. He was a Tramway Conductor in Sydney, New South Wales when he enlisted in August 1915 at Holsworthy Barracks.
Born 1884 in Everton, Liverpool. Son of Charles West Jones and of Agnes (Donnan) Jones of Ardrossan, Ayrshire.
Grandson of William and Mary Donnan of Kirkinner.
Missing in Action – 23 March 1918.
Commonwealth War Grave – Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
