John's service record shows he was 20 when he enlisted in April 1916 and was a ploughman at Bankhead Farm, Stevenston. His father was John of Ardoch Crescent, Stevenston and his siblings were James 18; Jessie 22; Bessie 19 and Ann 16. The 1901 census shows the family at Shore Road, Stevenston and his mother as Catherine. There was also a brother Thomas born 1888. Thomas birth record shows he was born on 16 December 1887 and his parents as John and Catherine. The 1901 census shows the family living at Shore Road and a brother John who is also on the memorial.
The record of soldiers died in the Great War shows John was living in Bayswater and enlilsted in London
