Mary, I'm really pleased that you posted the story of the Italians.
I heard a fleeting reference during a "Who do you think you are?" programme that young men who had not sought naturalization were obliged to register their whereabouts with the nearest Italian Embassy or Consulate so that they could be recalled for military service when needed.
However I had never seen any evidence for this until now.
Many thanks

Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald 10th November 1916

"SALTCOATS
CARLO CAVANI, ITALIAN INFANTRY
(Died on Service)
Word has been received in Saltcoats that Carlo Cavani, Italian Infantry, has died of fever in a field hospital. Carlo Cavani, previous to joining the Italian Army, resided at 17 Dockhead Street, and carried on business as an ice-cream merchant at shops there and in Chapelwell Street. He was well known and much respected in Saltcoats, where he had resided for fourteen years, and when he left to join the Colours on 23rd November last he was given an enthusiastic send-off by the public. He was 36 years of age, and his death occurred on his birthday. He leaves a widow and three of a family, who are now in Italy, and to them, as well as to his brother who is carrying on the business in Saltcoats, sympathy will be extended"

According to the Italian General Commission to Honour the Fallen in War - Commissione Generale Onoranze Caduti in Guerra it wasn't on his birthday.

http://www.difesa.it/Il_Ministro/CadutiInGuerra/Pagine/AlbodOro.aspx

I can find only one Carlo Cavani in the Italian First World War roll of Honour and his date and cause of death tally with the newspaper report.

Here's what is in the Roll:

Carlo Cavani di Giovacchino

Caporale 24 battaglione M. T., nato il 25 ottobre 1890 a Pieve Fosciana, distretto militare di Lucca, morto il 10 ottobre 1916 in Albani per malattia

And this is a Google Translate translation:

Carlo Cavani of Giovacchino

Corporal 24th Battalion MT, born October 25 1890 in Pieve Fosciana, the military district of Lucca, died October 10, 1916 in Albania from disease

The Italians were in Albania as part of the Allied forces protecting Greece from the Bulgarians. The British were there in Salonika.
