Kilmelford Memorial, Lorne
Location: In front of Kilmelford Parish Church, Beside A816
OS Ref: NM 849 129

Although the cross itself is unremarkable the way the text wraps round the base is interesting. Note also the war is described as the 'War of Nations 1914 - 1919'

Is the memorial being propped up?

I do like the amount of detail on each individual that it lists.
For anyone with a basic grasp of the Great War it is like reading a chronology of Hell.

Derek

Yes, that's scaffolding holding it up. Hopefully it is temporary.

A photograph from "Miss MacDougalls Photo Album". It's not propped up in this one!

Here are a few extra pics I took in July 2007. The memorial stands on a slight slope below the kirk and water seems to be draining down to the base of the monument. I kneeled on what I thought was grass in front of the pedestal and my knee sunk about six inches into bog. I take it the problem is subsidance and the monument might have to be moved and re-built on better foundations.

The church still appears to be in use and the scaffolding is all gone.

It's a great wee memorial.
