This memorial is to the Officers and men from the 74th Highlanders (later the HLI ) who were casualties in the 8th XHOSA WARS or CAPE FRONTIER WARS .

Just to clarify Pat's comments. The South Africa names are from the 8th XHOSA WARS or CAPE FRONTIER WARS

The wars listed are:

In India 1789 - 1805

In the Peninsula and France 1810 - 1814

In South Africa 1851 - 2

In Egypt 1882

Loss of HMS 'Birkenhead' 1852

the memorial was erected in 1886 when the 74th Highlanders were officially called the 2nd Bn Highland Light Infantry.

They had been 2nd Bn HLI since 1st July 1881 but were still wearing their 74th trews at Tel-el-Kebir in September 1882 (as were the old 72nd who had become 1st Bn Seaforth Highlanders but were still in trews for this campaign)

Interestingly it doesn't show the Indian Mutiny. The 74th were in India in 1857-58 but were not involved in the main campaigns so did not suffer many losses. Without any officers dying during that war I'm assuming that it why it was left off the memorial.

It also doesn't list the officers and men the regiment would have lost to disease in India and Africa over that period.

Thanks

Adam

The men lost at Tel-el-Kebir are also commemorated on a memorial in Glasgow Cathedral
