As a "link" to another memorial - The Castle Douglas War Memorial was unveiled on Sunday 1 May 1921 by Lt. Colonel John McKie, DSO, a resident of Castle Douglas.
According to the Stewartry RoH, Colonel McKie was gazetted in May 1875 into the Scottish Borders Militia (later the KOSB) He served in South Africa in 1900 and 1902. Awarded the DSO and the Queen's Medal (3 bars) he retired in 1903 as a Major (Hon. Lt.Col.)
Mobilised in August 1914 he was appointed purchasing Remount Officer in the Remount Service.
