Interestingly enough, Herbert's name appears on the Hawick Roll of Honour though I've not been able to find out why.
He was married to Violet, the daughter of Mr John Corse-Scott of Synton near Hawick.
Corse-Scott was "well-to-do" and he lost both his sons in the Great War, John Michael Corse-Scott in 1917 and Alexander, to disease caught on active service, in 1919.
Alexander is not commemorated by the CWGC and is just one of the many men I'm looking to have added to the CWGC database.

Both the Corse-Scott sons appear listed on the Ashkirk War Memorial which sits inside the Ashkirk church, though why Herbert appears on the Hawick Roll and not at Ashkirk doesn't make sense to me at the moment. http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=297&highlight=ashkirk

According to a survey of Glasserton churchyard, there are two memorials in the church itself. I haven't been to see myself (and access is limited) but the wording is:

Suffbulatis Majores Sequor. Highland Light Infantry. To the Glory of God and in loving memory of Herbert Eustace Johnston Stewart, Captain 2nd Batt Highland Light Infantry. Born at Glasserton 11th July 1880. Served with the Imperial Mounted Infantry in the South African War 1899-1902. Killed in action at Richebourg L'Aroue, France, 17th May 1915. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. And of Violet Corse Scott, his loving wife, who died 18th July 1918.

In loving memory of James Johnston Stewart, Captain Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders born April 1 1871. Killed in action at Cumburru, Somaliland April 17th 1903 when serving in the 2nd Batt Kings African Rifles. He served his country in the North west Frontier of India Campaign 1897. In the Ashanti Campaign 1900 and in the South African war 1901-2. Was four times mentioned in despatches and received medals with clasps.

The names on this memorial and on the Roll of Honour in the Parish Church are listed by date of death.
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=6208
There is one man, JOHN GRIFFIN, who is not on the RoH and one who is on the Roll, JOHN SMITH, but he is not listed here.
I have listed the names as they appear on the memorial but in alphabetical order; and have added Rank and Regiment details from the Roll of Honour.

JOHN ANDERSON - RSF.
John Anderson, Private (7730 & 240647) 1/5th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age ??.

Born ???? [I cannot trace this man]
Son of George Anderson. (Source:Army Registers of Soldiers Effects)
Missing in action 29 November 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
I had previously thought that this was a John Brown Anderson born 1891 at Appleby Farm, Glasserton the son of Andrew and Agnes (Brown) Anderson. However the Soldiers effects record has proved that to be wrong.

Alexander Broadfoot, Military Medal Private (130245) 72nd Battalion (Seaforth Highlanders of Canada) Canadian Infantry. Age 28.
Alexander was brought up at Clarksburn, Monreith Village in Glasserton, living with his aunt Elizabeth Turner and, until he emigrated to Canada in 1913, he had worked as a grocer in Port William for 5 years. He was still in this trade when he enlisted in February 1916 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He arrived in England in May 1916 and in France in August. He was awarded the Military Medal in July 1917 for actions at Vimy Ridge in April. Alexander was treated for shrapnel wounds in the 44th Casualty Clearing Station on 30 October 1917 and evacuated to the 56th General Hospital in Etaples where he died.
Born 1889 in Horwich, Bolton, Lancashire. Son of the late Alexander and Margaret (Turner) Broadfoot of Monreith Village, Wigtownshire.
Died of wounds on 8 November 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
