PostPosted: Thu Oct 23, 2014 6:27 pm    Post subject: Saltcoats Memorial - Douglas R Kinnier Reply with quote

Liverpool Echo 11 November 1914
"CAPTAINS SERVICES REWARDED"
The following resolution has been passed at a meeting of the committee of the Liverpool and London War Risks Insurance Association Ltd.:-"The committee record their high appreciation of the seamanlike skill and courage shown by Captain Douglas Reid Kinnier in navigating, in September, 1914, the R.M.S. Ortega through Nelson Strait and Smyth Channel to Magellan Straits, therby saving both the ship and cargo from capture by a German cruiser, and resolve that a sum of 100 guineas be voted to him"

Daily Record 24 November 1914
"SIGNAL HONOUR FROM THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT
Paris, Monday
M. Deleasse, Minister for Foregin Affairs, has requested Sir Francis Bertie, his Majesty's Ambassador, to present a gold chronometer, the gift of the French Government, together with the Government's thanks to Captain Douglas Reid Kinnier, of the steamship Ortega, for his admirable bravery in escaping from the pursuit of a German cruiser in the Straits of Magellan, and therby saving the lives of three hundred French reservists who were on board his ship. - (Reuter.)"

Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald 5 March 1915
"CAPTAIN D. R. KINNIER HONOURED
--------
PRESENTATION FROM FRENCH GOVERNMENT
-----------
Additional recognition of the gallant action of Captain Douglas R Kinnier, commander of the Ortega, was made last week, when Captain Kinnier was entertained in the Council Chambers of the Liverpool Town Hall, and presented with two handsome gifts.
The Lord Mayor presided over a distinguished company, and on behalf of the President of the French Republic presented Captain Kinnier with a handsome gold watch, and also a cheque for £100 from Sir Norman Hill, on behalf of the Liverpool and London War Risks Insurance Association.
Captain Kinnier, in replying, said a sailor could not be expected to be a public speaker. Their motto must be deeds, and not words. As for himself, it was sufficient satisfaction that a noble ship was saved, and that as a result 100 British and 300 French were now fighting for the Allies. He could not let the opportunity pass of publicly testifying to the splendid services of his officers, engineers, and crew. Every man worked like a Britisher, and he was proud of them. He took the presentation as a compliment to them just as much as it was to himself. He begged to say how deeply he appreciated the thanks of the French Government - which would be treasured in the records of his family - for their present of that gold watch, which he took as a kindly hint always to take time by the forelock. He wished to thank the Lord Mayor for his kind and encouraging speech, and to say that, apart form those presentations, they had sufficient satisfaction in feeling that they had been of some service to their country. (Loud applause) He also wished to thank Sir Norman Hill and the Committee of the LIverpool and London War Risks Insurance Association for their cheque"

Birmingham Daily Post 6 March 1915
"COURT CIRCULAR
BUCKINGHAM PALACE, Friday
...His Majesty also decorated the following with the Distinquished Service Cross - Lieutenant Douglas Reid Kinnier, captain of the s.s. Ortega, and Leiutenant William Henry Propert, captain of the s.s.Laertes"

There is a wikipedia entry for Douglas which confirms he was born on 20 October 1858 and was brought up in Saltcoats. It provides a summary of the escape of the Ortega and also adds that he had a further honour from Liverpool - "using the funds of a public subscription, the Lord Mayor of LIverpool presented Captain Kinnier with a silk Union flag which was later presented by the family to Saltcoats Burgh Council in May 1931"(this is recorded in the group picture below)
Douglas features in a book "Daring Deeds of Merchant Seaman in the Great War" - available on-line at google books - Chapter V "Through Uncharted Waters", pages 66 to 77. This says that Douglas "had the honour of being the first seaman to be presented with the Distinguished Service Cross"
