We have always run this forum and the Scottish Military Research Group on the basis we share our information freely. We are proud of our amateur status and ethos and have never asked anyone for money for the information we provide.

We took on charitable status last year and since then we have started collecting small amounts of money for the group’s activities. For example we have purchased a couple of display banners for the talks or for the fairs we attend and paid for backups of our electronic databases. Some kind individuals and groups have donated some money to us so we have a very modest pot of money at the moment but we have no guaranteed income and that pot will dwindle over time. We have plans to do more talks but to do that we really need our own equipment, which unfortunately isn’t cheap. We would like to be able to organise our own series of talks but that will take up-front money to hire venues and for speakers’ expenses (although we’d hopefully recoup some of that outlay with a modest attendance fee for the audience).

We also have hopes to move our war memorials and war graves data, and the information of those listed on them, onto one database. To pay for that will need a huge amount of money and realistically that can only come from grant funding from the likes of the Heritage Lottery Fund, but any other contributions we can get would be gratefully received. This would help us on our way to achieve the creation of a database worthy of the data it contains.

We are always looking for ways to make it easier to donate and so we have recently signed up to a third-party online donation facility The service we have chosen to use, which is described in detail below, costs nothing to use, but will help generate a steady income for the Scottish Military Research Group, while offering a simpler, more direct way for people to support us.

easyfundraising

How it works:

With easyfundraising.org.uk it is not you who donates, but the retailer you are purchasing from. easyfundraising has agreements with hundreds of retailers, so that when you purchase from them, via their online store, they will donate a percentage of your total order value to The Scottish Military Research Group. With most retailers it is a small percentage, but with some larger items, such as car insurance for example, donations can be in the order of £30 to £40!

How to get donations for The Scottish Military Research Group:

1. Start at easyfundraising

Let’s say you want to buy a pair of headphones from Amazon. Instead of going to amazon.co.uk directly, you first go to easyfundraising.org.uk.

You will need to register with the site before you can get donations. Click on “Support us now” and then create your account by completing the form and clicking “Create my account”.

2. Make a purchase

From the easyfundraising website, click through to Amazon to make your purchase. This tells Amazon you came from easyfundraising. The price of the headphones is exactly the same.

3. Get a donation

After you make your purchase, Amazon will give you a cash reward that you can turn into a donation for your good cause. easyfundraising collect this and send it on to The Scottish Military Research Group at no extra cost.

5. Get the easyfundraising Donation Reminder

You can skip steps 1 and 2 with the easyfundraising Donation Reminder. Just click the reminder when you shop, to receive any eligible donations (the reminder appears in your browser the first time you visit an online retailer once you’ve signed up). You’ll never forget a free donation again!

I have signed up for this. It only took a couple of minutes.

Cheers

David reminded me about this recently (much to my shame) so I thought that I would bump it up to the top again.
