I popped into Strathblane graveyard today and took a pic which I think proves Gunner Callander's name is spelled incorrectly on the war memorial.
If this were to be proved conclusively, is this something that could be corrected? I can't get over that a mistake like this could be made for a man who gave his life for his country.

It happens. Variations in spelling are more common on WW1 memorials but I have seen examples on WW2. One family I know of used McMyn and McMinn during their own lives (born as McMyn, married and served as McMinn - McMyn on family gravestone)
In your case, it might have been a mistake but it might just have been how the name was known locally.

Gunner Callander is listed on our 'sister' site (The Scottish War Graves Project), see:

http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=992&mforum=scottishwargraves

As Ken said, unfortunately mistakes are made in names - we've come across this many times especially when it comes to Mc/Mac/Mack etc. More commonly seen on WW1 memorials than on WW2.

I was recently in contact with CWGC when I found an error on one of their stones in St. Peter's Cemetery in Glasgow. The man's name was Longridge and on the stone, it was inscribed as Longlidge. It was a WW2 stone, so hopefully now that I've sent photos, birth certificates and a load of other 'proof', eventually, the inscription will be amended.

I'm not sure how you would go about getting a memorial changed. Maybe if you were to contact Stirlingshire Council?

Dear Alan,

I am writing in response to your query regarding the correction of a name. This can be corrected if the custodian of the memorial is happy for this to be done. The ease by which this can be done will depend on the material and style of the memorial.

You may find War Memorials Trust's helpsheet on the Addition of names useful as it contains a lot of relevant information: http://www.warmemorials.org/uploads/publications/115.pdf

I hope that this is of interest. If we can be of any assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind Regards

I thought the info on this link was really useful. Since the question of adding or amending a name seems to come up quite often should this link be made a "sticky" (whatever that is) so that it is made more visible?

Dear Ken,

I am glad that you found this helpsheet useful and am more than happy for this information to be shared and made more visible.

I am afraid I do not know what you mean about making it a 'sticky' however, I am happy either for someone else to do this or to do it myself if anyone can inform me of how to go about it.

Kind Regards

Emma,

If you create a post in the "useful links" section for this link I will ensure it remains at the top of the page for people to see (That's what making it "sitcky" means).

Regards,

David

"REMOVED FROM THE ARMY" while a 2nd Lieutenant in the 10th/11th HLI????

What was that all about???

Incidentally, while looking for some info., I ran across this article in The Herald (published 4 August 2014) about the researching of the memorial by a local group.

I have no idea what's going on Ken!

I've never seen 'Removed from the army' before - that was my main reason for posting his MIC (in case anyone thought I had got it wrong!).

He was Wilfred on the 1901 Census, so was called that as a wee boy.

It may interest you to know that a group of Strathblane locals have published a book about the 27 men listed on Strathblane War Memorial who fell in the First World War.

Details here -
