Not a Captain but a Mate Ernest E. Vallance was in the Merchant Service and died of Kidney failure aged 31 at the 59th Military Hospital, Bougle.

The Daily Record and Mail Thursday July 20, 1916 has the following article
"STRICKEN KIPPEN FAMILY
Bombadier William Chrystal, of Douglas Place, Kippen, who was killed while serving his gun in France, is the third member of his family who has made the ultimate sacrifice. His brother Andrew, who came from Canada to join the Highland Light Infantry, and another brother, Robert, of the Argylls, were both killed in the earlier stages of the war. Twenty-seven years of age, Bombadier Chrystal had served for four years in the Army before war broke out, and came with the forces from India. He was wounded twice soon after he went to France"

Thomas was a tailor living with his family at Roseberry Place, Gullane when he enlisted as Private (1264) in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in September 1914. He joined the 1/8th Battalion in France in April 1915.
Born 1893 in Kippen, Stirlingshire. Son of John and Helen (Macfarlane) Gilchrist of Roseberry Place, Gullane and of Aros House, Kippen.
Missing in Action on 22 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
