Strathdearn War Memorial
Location: Off the road, in a field, surrounded by trees and a fence, just south of the village of Tomatin
OS Ref: NH 8042 2813

Tomatin - Inverness District
The Tomatin (Strathdearn) war memorial is a rustic grey granit obelik set on a cairn constructed of local stone. The names of the dead are listed on grey granit tablets set into the face of the cairn although the third tablet is a later addition and is a little confusing as it is headed 1939-1945 and this only appears to refer to the one name immediately below, Trooper Grieves, while the rest of the names are of men killed in other conflicts. The memorial stands on a low hill in a stand of conifer trees.
I'd be interested to know what the Guides (FE) stands for against the name of Patrick Grant, Malaya...is it Field Engineers?

Jim

It will be Guides (FF) for Frontier Force and it is the campaign above he is commemorated for, Waziristan 1937.

The unit is the 5th Bn (Guides), 12th Frontier Force Regt (but was actually the senior battalion of the 12th FFR)

Apart from Wishaw I don't think I've seen inter war campaigns commemorated on another memorial. The post war campaigns are not always listed either.

I wonder if this last plaque was added fairly recently by the local RBL?

Thanks for posting this interesting memorial.

I've just noticed that these two officers are both called Patrick Grant. I wonder if they are related?
