The AIF Project - The site http://www.aif.adfa.edu.au:8080/index.html appears similar in intent to the Canadian Great War Project in that it aims to provide details on the 330,000 men and women who served overseas in the Australian Imperial Force.

The AIF Project has come back on-line after being upgraded.
However (and probably because it is Australian) it not only works but is even better than before.
One really useful addition is that you can now search by Next of Kin address.
I've just found a Garlieston man (James Smith) I've been looking for for ages, by using "Wigtownshire" in the address search-box - and up he popped Laughing
http://www.aif.adfa.edu.au:8080/search?type=search&name=smith&regNum=1062&place=

His CWGC entry shows why I couldn't find him previously:
SMITH, JAMES
Rank:Private
Service No:1062
Date of Death:20/09/1917
Regiment/Service:Australian Infantry, A.I.F. 17th Bn.
Panel Reference:Panel 7 - 17 - 23 - 25 - 27 - 29 - 31.
Memorial:YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL
Additional Information:

Good to see this back. It has lots of details, due to the preserved AIF records. Noticed a few transcription errors though - but not much of a problem as I searched on different parts of the NOK address.

Out of interest - is there any such a site for New Zealand in the way there are for Australia, Canada and the UK?

e.g. if looking to identify a solider on a local memorial - I will typically use CWGC and SNWM, and if necessary SDGW and the Medal Index Cards.

If any Canadian / Australia connection I can also go to their relevant sites.

I think I recall something for Newfoundland as well, but don't quote me on that.

But is there any similar comprehensive database for the New Zealanders, or even South Africa or some of the smaller colonies?

I suspect the answers will be in threads on here, or from online searches, but in this sort of case I often think best just to ask experience!

Kenny - there's more than one NZ site but I tend to rely on this one:
http://muse.aucklandmuseum.com/databases/cenotaph/locations.aspx

as far as I'm aware there isn't a site for SA.

Many thanks.

So it seems South Africa is the only Dominion not available.

I thought I had found or seen some site on an African territorty... perhaps it was Rhodesia? Or I could just be rambling!

Like Rhodesia, India was never a Dominion in the formal sense.

India, Pakistan and Ceylon were for a brief time immediately after 1947.
