Stuart ("stewartry") mentioned to me the other week that he thought there might be a 4th WW1 panel on this memorial - and he was right.
I have never noticed that it was "missing". It's at the rear of the memorial.

I have removed the photobucket logo.

On looking at the actual memorial yesterday, I noticed for the first time that there is a row of thistles carved into the stone on the base along the front left corner as you face the statue. It doesn't come out well on the photos but you can make it out on the first photo on the thread once you look for it. It just makes it something other than a plain stone base.

You can perhaps see the thistles better in this photo:

The book "Kirkcudbright: An Alphabetical Guide To Its History" by David R.Collin, 2003, states that the sculpture was cast in the foundry of McDonald & Creswick in Gorgie Road, Edinburgh.
This company were said to have cast several other large statues including "Youth", the centre piece of Hawick's War Memorial.

McDonald & Creswick seems to have been in business between 1920 and 1950. Their business at 60 Gorgie Road is now a garage near Tynecastle.

Galloway Gazette 4/12/1915: Mrs W Keelan, Kirkcudbright, learned on Sunday that her husband, Private William Keelan, 5th Australian Light Infantry, had been knocked down and killed by a motor car in London. Private Keelan left Kirkcudbright for Australia about eight years ago, and on the outbreak of war joined the Australian contingent, and was sent to the Dardanelles where he was wounded. He was transferred to a hospital in England and on recovering from his wounds returned to Kirkcudbright six weeks ago to get married.

Ken Morrison has pointed out to me that there are many more details about William Keelan at http://www.gatehouse-folk.org.uk/ww1.asp?rec=keelan
