Named on the Wanlockhead War Memorial in Dumfriesshire as:

LIEUT. P. C. BENTLEY BLAIR, K.R.R.C.
Patrick Charles Bentley Blair – age 24 – Second Lieutenant, 5th Battalion, Rifle Brigade.
Patrick was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh, where he played rugby and field hockey, and at King's College, Cambridge where he played for the King's College team and Cambridge University R.F.C. He was capped five times for Scotland in 1912–13, against South Africa, Wales, Ireland, England and France. After earning a first-class B.A. degree at Cambridge, Patrick joined the Egyptian Civil Service's Finance Department. At the outbreak of war he returned to Cambridge for military training and was commissioned from there into the Rifle Brigade in March 1915. He went to France in May but six weeks later, he was killed by a shell in Boezinge, Flanders.
Born 1891 in Wanlockhead. Son of the Rev. Charles Patrick Blair, M.A. and of Jane or Jeanie Bogle (Smith) Blair of the Manse, Wanlockhead.
Killed in Action on 6 July 1915 and buried in Talana Farm Cemetery, Belgium.

ROSS-SHIRE officer killed in ACTION.
Second-Lieut. Gilbert Robertson, Cameron Highlanders,- attached 1st Battalion who has been killed action, only recently left Fettes College, where he was head of the school, and gained an open scholarship at Oriel College, Oxford. He was 19 years of age, and was the son of Mr Robert Robertson, Logie Easter Schoolhouse, Kildary. Ross-shire. Besides being a prominent scholar, he was a member of the Fettes. Rugby football team.

FETTESIAN KILLED News was received yesterday afternoon that Sec. Lt. Gilbert Robertson , who recently left Fettes College, had been killed in action. He was head of the school, and gained an open scholarship at Oriel College, Oxford, last December. He was with the 1st Cameron Highlanders when killed. Sec. Lt. Robertson was a prominent member of the school , being a promising scholar, and was also in the fifteens. He was the son of Mr Robert Robertson, Logie Easter Schoolbouse, Kildary, Ross-shire.
Sec. Lt. Robertson was 19 years of age .

Also named on the Logie Easter War Memorial.

These two brothers are named on the various Glencairn Parish War Memorials in Dumfriesshire.

John Cassels Monteith – age 39 – Lieutenant Colonel, 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.
“Jack” was educated at Cargilfield School and at Fettes College in Edinburgh, and at Glasgow University where he graduated in 1897. He was studying for a LL.B. when he was commissioned in the Bedfordshire Regiment in May 1900 and he spent the next seven years in India. He returned to Glasgow University as Adjutant to the Officer Training Corps in January 1912 and re-joined his old regiment in August 1914, landing in France with the 1st Battalion. He fought at Mons, Le Cateau and Cambray before being wounded near Ypres in November. He was evacuated home and was appointed to the School of Instruction for Officers at Cambridge before he returned to France in August 1915. John was killed two months later commanding the 2nd Battalion near Hulloch during the battle of Loos.
Born 1875 in Glencairn. Son of the late Rev. John Monteith of Glencairn Parish Church (died 1886) and of Ellen Maria (Neve) Monteith (died 1912)
Husband of Jane Robertson (Wilson) Monteith of Glenluiart, Moniaive who he married in April 1914 in Airdrie, Old Monklands.
Killed in Action on 1 October 1915 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Cargilfield School and Fettes College memorials and on the Glasgow University Roll of Honour.

William Neve Monteith
– age 37 – Lieutenant, 6th (Reserve) Battalion attached to the 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade.
William was educated at Cargilfield School and at Fettes College in Edinburgh, and at Magdalen College Oxford, where he gained his B.A., before studying Theology at the University of Glasgow from where he graduated B.D. in April 1904. After graduation he acted as assistant in the “Scotch” Church at Buenos Aires and then served as Assistant to the Reverend Dr Playfair of St. Andrews before getting his own parish in Elie in Fife in 1907. He enlisted in the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry at the outbreak of war and was commissioned in the Rifle Brigade in January 1915. He joined his battalion in France in May 1915 but was killed at Bois-Grenier during the battle of Loos.
Born 1878 in Glencairn. Son of the late Rev. John Monteith of Glencairn Parish Church (died 1886) and of Ellen Maria (Neve) Monteith (died 1912) Husband of Muriel May (Cox) Monteith of West House, Elie, Fife who he married in 1915 in Largo, Fife.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Cargilfield School and Fettes College memorials, on the Glasgow University Roll of Honour, on the Church of Scotland Ministers memorial in St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, on the Magdalen College memorial, on the Elie & Earlsferry War Memorial, on the Elie Parish Church memorial, on an individual memorial in the church, and on the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Iglesia Presbiteriana San Andrιs) memorial in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The son of the Rev. Dr. Playfair of St. Andrews mentioned in William Neve Monteith's entry (above) is also named on the various Glencairn Parish War Memorials in Dumfriesshire.

Patrick Lyon Playfair – age 24 – Captain, "B" Company. 1/7th (Fife) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Patrick was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh from 1907 and was at King's College, Cambridge when the war broke out. He was commissioned in the 7th Black Watch in October 1914 and promoted to Lieutenant (Temp. Captain) in September 1916. He was wounded near Arras in April 1917 and returned to his battalion in March 1918 but was killed two weeks later.
Born 1893 in Glencairn. Son of the Rev. Patrick Macdonald Playfair, D.D. formerly minister of Glencairn and minister of Holy Trinity, St Andrews, and of Eliza Ann (Walker) Playfair of Wyvern, St. Andrews, Fife.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1918 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the St. Andrews War memorial.

Named on the Maxton Parish War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

K.E. CUNNINGHAM. CAPT, DUKE OF WELLINGTONS.
Kenneth Edward Cunningham – age 32 – Captain, 2nd Battalion, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment)
Kenneth was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh and was on the staff of John Crossley and Sons, carpet manufacturers, at Dean Clough Mills in Halifax. He was living at 26 Ventnor Terrace, Halifax when he married in February 1914. He was commissioned in August 1914 and joined his battalion in France in March 1915 but was badly wounded at Hill 60 near Ypres in April. Kenneth was promoted to Captain in June 1916 but a year later he was wounded and reported missing at the Rouex Chemical Works near Arras. His death while a prisoner of war was confirmed by the Germans but his burial place was lost.
Born 1884 in Kelso, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Charles John Cunningham (died 1906) and of Margaret (Crossley) Cunningham of Muirhouselaw, St. Boswells, Maxton. Husband of Mary Isobel Murray (Allison) Cunningham who he married in February 1914 in St. Marylebone, London. In 1921 she became Mrs. Arthur V. Lister of 30, Headlands, Kettering, Northamptonshire.
Died of Wounds on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named in the Borough of Halifax Book of Remembrance.

His older brother, Charles Clement Francis Cunningham, Captain, 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders died of wounds on 19 August 1916 and is also named on the Maxton War Memorial.
Their eldest brother, Lieutenant Alexander Crossley Cunningham of the 6th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry was killed on 24 October 1901 at Smithfield South Africa in the Boer War.

James Ross – age 34 – Private (2565) 1/14th Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish)
In 1891 James was at Cargilfield School in Leith and continued his education at Fettes College in Edinburgh. He played rugby with the London Scottish which he captained in 1901/2 and in 1904/5 and he was capped for Scotland five times between 1901&03. By 1908 he was a stockbroker living at Throgmorton Street, London. In 1911 he was living with his widowed mother Emily Harriet Ross at Hazelwood, Warlingham, Surrey and they were at Starrock Court, Chipstead, Surrey when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in September 1914 and they were in action at Messines six weeks later where James was killed.
Born 1880 at Rutherford, Maxton. Son of the late Richard Ross (died 1908) and Emily Harriet (Johnson) Ross.
Missing in Action on 1 November 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Cargilfield School memorial, the Fettes College memorial, the Scottish Rugby Union memorial at Murrayfield and on the Chipstead Village War Memorial.


RICHARD ROSS. LIEUT. DEVONSHIRE REGIMENT.
Richard (Dickon) Ross, Military Cross – age 22 – Second Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment.
Known to the family as “Dickon” Richard, aged 16, was at Fettes College in Edinburgh in 1911. He enlisted as Corporal (3/6922) in the Devonshires and was commissioned from Cadet in the Officer Training Corps in November 1914. He joined his battalion in France in May 1915 and was awarded a Military Cross in the King's Birthday Honours in June 1916. His remains were recovered from the Somme battlefield and he was re-interred at Lesboeufs in August 1919.
Born 1894 at Rutherford, Maxton. Son of the late Richard Ross (died 1908) and Emily Harriet (Johnson) Ross of Starrock Court, Chipstead, Surrey and of The Bungalow, North Road, Sherborne, Dorset.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1916 and buried in Guards' Cemetery, Lesboeufs, Somme, France.
Also named on the Fettes College memorial and on the Chipstead Village War Memorial.

Thomas Stewart Ross – age 18 – Second Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
In 1911 Thomas, aged 11, was living at Rutherford Farm House in Maxton with his elder sisters, Elizabeth and Emily and his brother John. He was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh before enlisting as Private (52706) in the 4th (Reserve) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He was commissioned from an Officer Cadet Unit in June 1918 and joined his battalion in France in October 1918 but he died a month later, two days after the armistice.
Born 1899 at Rutherford, Maxton. Youngest son of the late Richard Ross (died 1908) and Emily Harriet (Johnson) Ross of Starrock Court, Chipstead, Surrey and of The Bungalow, North Road, Sherborne, Dorset.
Died of Wounds on 13 November 1918 and buried in Premont British Cemetery, Aisne, France.
Also named on the Fettes College memorial and on the Chipstead Village War Memorial.
