Hello All,

Robert Heatlie Nisbet, 413939, Royal Army Service Corps, Mechanical Transport is commemorated on the Prestonpans War Memorial. Two of his brothers, Samuel and James, are there too. He was born at Broxburn, West Lothian and resided at Prestonpans, East Lothian. He was called up on 24 July 1918 and discharged unfit for service on 9 Feb 1919. He died 19 November 1919 at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, cause of death was a fracture of the cervical spine.

His service record on ancestry is Robert Heatly Nisbet. Shows GSW(?) to head, Degree of Disablement 50%. At the top of this form, there seems to be a date: 20/5/15. This links in with a letter from a doctor who certifies he attended Robert when he returned home in March 1915. The handwriting is terrible so please correct me if I have deciphered it wrongly. Looks like "fractured skull" and "lacerations of the brain". Also says, "after his head injury" he is "mentally ?" and "lacking in self control" "occasional fits". In the doctor's opinion, he took a fit and the fall resulted in his death.

However, the doctor finishes the letter with, "death was therefore a result of the head injury sustained in battle on 2 December 1914." I cannot find any other information about previous service so any help appreciated.

Also, Jim, I couldn't find him on CWGC site. However, as you may have found, today the site is having problems so he may be there. If not, could he be considered?

Thanks,
Mags

I can't see him on the CWGC either. Only 2 R Nisbet in WW1 and neither match.

Thanks, David. I'll send the info I have to Jim. Wondering if, where and when he served before.

I wondered if anymore information was found on Robert Nisbet's previous war service. I have been doing some family research and Robert was my Grandmothers brother. The family story was that he was pushed into the river larking about with friends on the way home from the pub in Musselburgh. The plate in his head was always thought to be the cause and presumably this was the reason he was added to the Pans war memorial.
I plan to visit the graves of his two brothers Samuel and James next week. I have not been able to find out much more about either of them. Sam seems to have died from wounds on 2/11/17 possibly at the 8th Casualty Clearing Station but I have not found any record so far. James may have been involved in the taking of Dadizeele by the 9th Scottish Division. The records suggest he was killed in action on 30/9/18.

Thanks for the additional information on James and Samuel. I hadn't got round to looking at Ancestry and I have now just found out it was free all Easter weekend.

My father has passed on a paper copy of Robert's record of War badge and certificate (no 108Y03 issued 8/1/17). It turns out that he served with 8 Royal Scots, service number 1008.

Ken - First of all, a belated welcome to the Project Very Happy

The man you mention in your last post was Private (1008) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
This Territorial Army Battalion was based at Haddington and Robert joined them on 31 March 1914. They were mobilised for overseas duty and landed at Le Havre on 5 November 1914. They were posted to the 22nd Brigade of the 7th Infantry Division. Robert was probably wounded at Ypres and was discharged from the army due to his wounds on 30 April 1915. He was awarded a Silver War Badge, No.108203.
(from his Campaign Medal Card and SWB record)

I'm not sure that this man was the brother of James and Samuel whereas the Robert detailed by Mags in the first post above certainly was. He named his mother Mary Nisbet of 13 Front Street as his next of kin.

Oh the joys of research Very Happy

Ken - I've just had a look at the service file of the Robert H Nisbet 413939 which Mags refers to and I'm fairly well convinced that it is one and the same man as 1008.
I cannot follow it up just now but I will dig further.
