On my latest visit to Holland in May this year, I came across this memorial on the wall of the church in Dinxperlo, Holland. Dedicated to 51st Highland Division but to, 5th Seaforths and 7th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in particular.

Dinxperlo seems to have been a nasty engagement for the 51st Division. The Canadian and British troops moving through this part of the Netherlands had overtaken elements of the German Army and ended up fighting troops behind them as well as in front.

According to Alastair Borthwick’s book ‘Sans Peur’ The 5th Seaforths, 152 Brigade, were out of the line by 29th March and had been replaced by troops from 154th Brigade. I will try and find out more about this engagement and post it.

It’s a shame the plaque doesn’t mention when or why it was erected.

"but at 9pm. 29th March, 154th brigade passed through to attack Dinxperlo, the Guards Armoured Division broke out ..........."

5th Seaforth had been fighting hard just outside Dinxperlo at a place called "Groin" or "Gruin" whist 5th Camerons were tasked with attacking a brickworks nearby at "Im Lohr". 152 brigade stopped at the line of the canal facing Dinxperlo and allowed 154th brigade through. Have photos at my website www.keep-em-moving.com
