Hi Derek
I saw your post dated 10 December 2011 re you being unable to trace Andrew Huldberg listed on the Bo'ness War Memorial as having died during WW1. I came across it while researching my Huldberg family ancestry.
Andrew was my great uncle. He died in Edinburgh in 1943. My grandmother (his sister) and my mum told me that Andrew had been very upset to discover that his name was included with the names of the fallen. Clearly it was an error. I don't know if he tried to re-dress the situation but as you know his name remains.
I hope that this will clear up the mystery for you.
Kind regards.

Hi Diane,

Jim posted information similar a few years ago that Andrew died years after the war. So it looks liek his name reallt shouldn;t be there. I've seen plenty of calls for names to be added to memorials, but rarely for them to be removed!

Thanks for confirming the story. I wonder how it came to be believed he had perished? Especially as most memorials were built a few years after the end of the war.

Do you know if he was a POW or even what regiment he served in was?

Cheers,
Derek.

Hi Derek
Yes, it's a strange one!
I don't remember my gran saying anything about him being a POW but I have traced his medal card at The National Archives. He was a Private in the Royal Scots Fusiliers. I haven't actually obtained the full record.
Do you think there may be info out there that could explain it or is just simply a mistake?
It does intrigue me I must say!

Regards
Diane

I have mentioned this posibility several time on the Forum, being the counter argument to adding names. No takers for it though. I agree.

I am opposed to some of the current thoughts about adding names to war memorials because someone in 2013 thinks they should be there. If it can be proven, beyond doubt, that a genuine error was made, I have no problem with that, but we are seeing names added after all thse years based on the flimsiest of evidence at times.
Those best placed to deal with the matter were those charged with erecting the memorial. Ok, they sometimes made mistakes, but some are absent because that is precisely what their NOK wanted for one reason. Why should a name be added now simply because their great, great, great ???? thinks it is a good idea?

Diane

Unfortunately his service record does not survive. It seems odd his sister / family members did not realise the error since lists of names were usually published many times long before the war memorial was complete. I do not think he was in Boness at this time and his family believed he was dead.

Hi Jim
You know I never really considered the fact that there could be another reason for Andrew being listed on the memorial other than it being a 'clerical error'. The more I think about what you say the more I feel that the reason was indeed that for a period of time the family did not know his whereabouts and believed him to be dead. Perhaps my gran spoke of this but I was just a child and only the fact that Andrew had been upset about being included on the memorial has stuck in my memory. Sadly there are no family members with me anymore to ask. It is another tale to include in my family archive that intrigues me and will hopefully intrigue my children's children's children.....in the years to come.
Many thanks for your reply.
Regards
Diane

Diane

There are a number of possibilities which would explain, but it would appear he was not reported in error as having died.
He could have been imprisoned, a deserter, and inmate who lost his memory, etc, etc.
We may now never know the background, unless it is reported in the local papers.
